Truck Runs Red Light, Collides with Scrap Collector’s Motorcycle, Crushing Him

A six-wheel truck ran a red light, on the morning of September 10, hitting a scrap collector’s motorcycle before running over the man’s head, killing him instantly.

 

The tragic accident occurred earlier this morning at the Taksin Intersection in Tha Chang, Mueang District, Chanthaburi Province. The Sawang Katanyu Thammasathan Rescue Centre reported the incident and dispatched rescue volunteers to the scene. Upon arrival, responders found a six-wheel goods truck had collided with a motorcycle and sidecar. Lying in the middle of the road was the lifeless body of the male motorcycle rider, his head crushed by the truck.

 

 

The truck involved was a white Hino, registered in Bangkok. The driver, 24-year-old Phuchit (surname withheld), told reporters that as he approached the intersection, the traffic light was yellow and flashing. Unable to brake in time, he sounded the truck’s horn but continued through the red light. At that moment, the motorcycle entered the intersection on a green light.
 

The truck struck the motorcycle forcefully, throwing the rider from his vehicle. Tragically, the truck’s wheels rolled over the victim's head, killing him instantly. Phuchit said he immediately stopped the truck, rushed out, and knelt to apologise to the deceased, admitting that he had been unable to stop in time.

 

The motorcycle was identified as a Yamaha registered in Chanthaburi. Authorities have not yet identified the deceased as no identification was found on him.

 

Police from Mueang Chanthaburi Station arrived at the scene, coordinating with doctors from Phra Pok Klao Hospital to conduct a preliminary examination of the body. They also took photographs of the accident site and collected evidence. CCTV footage from the intersection will be reviewed to ensure a fair investigation for all parties involved.
 

The victim's body has been taken to Phra Pok Klao Hospital, and authorities are working to locate the victim’s family for funeral arrangements.

I think the only way to deal with this level of recklessness and disregard for life is to impose a death penalty for traffic incidents that result in negligent homicide. Not only that, but the death penalty should be carried out within 60 days from the time of the accident.

 

Off with the fool! That kind of deterrent would have a tremendous effect.

This is a horrible intersection. It's downhill from where the truck comes from and they absolutely floor it across the intersection. Many times they flash their lights and run the red lights as they are too arsed to stop and wait for the next green light. I travel from the opposite side multiple times a week and always wonder how there are not more serious accidents there.

In which case the comments and suggestion made by Spidermike appear more necessary. 

 

Authorities are way too soft of such outrageous traffic offences.

 

The surprise here is that the driver hasn't claimed brake failure - As you pointed out above, your 'take on it' is more likely the the cause of the accident...  complete recklessness and driving without any regard for the safety of anyone else. 

 

 

 

 

Authorities just don't care - this driving will continue until effective action is taken with a degree of consistency to form a deferent.

I hear there are like 70 deaths a day on Thai roads, and can't believe the actual number is a fivefold.

Whenever I'm waiting for a red traffic light with a countdown timer, the cars and bikes start crossing the traffic light when the counter is at 2 or even 3.

I also see that the left or right side of the crossing will still be going strong when the light has turned red for a few seconds already.

Just the other day I was behind a tourist bus, and when the lights turned red, while the bus was still at a safe distance to stop, his brake lights didn't even flash for a second, and he went straight through the red light.

If police did their job, and be stationed t traffic light................oh wait they have their cabin at every major crossing............they would make a fortune in traffic fines every day

There goes my theory of never being the first through the intersection on Green light. Now amended to first or second. Black car in front of Samlor got through before the accident.

red light, speeding... there are really no consequences... why do we stop in the west? hundreds of euros per fine and if unpaid, you get impounded...

 

thais need to grow up

 

police maybe do their job... why not do like they do with drug busts?  let the police become the collector of the debt, well, paid online off course, otherwise, more corruption money to be maid

Usually in Rayong area the cars/motorbikes start moving only AFTER 2/5 seconds the green light !

 

Probably because they are used to have many people passing with yellow/red on the other sides (seems the case of this accident).

 

Seems more and more people don't want to stop and wait 5 or more minutest for the red.

 

Maybe time to adopt westener traffic light rules, meaning the green on 2 opposite ways in the X intersection, instead of 1 green at each side, so you get only 1/3 of time waiting

BS! He had ample time to stop, but he did not even bother to hit the breaks. Just honking the horn and believes he have the right of way. This is a daily routine for a multitude of truck drivers in Thailand.

Adjustment of traffic lights is a disaster in LOS, on some stretches where hardly any traffic comes, they manage to leave a traffic light on red for 3 minutes without even a vehicle passing, that invites...
I also see several intersections with 300-metre intervals where the traffic lights don't work in sync with the result that after the first traffic light has green, you have to stop at the next one again, that too is inviting....
And automatic adjustment through loops in the road surface they have never heard of either.

Totally the opposite here in Nan, the scooters start into the intersection while the light is still red.....and on top of that folks in the oncoming direction who want to turn right at the light will do so in front of you while the light is still red for them (just prior to turning green). 

 

.....and don't even get me started about pedestrian crosswalks or the lack of providing the right-of-way for ambulances.
