There's a damned good reason why the First Amendment of the US Constitution protects freedom of expression. Without the right to say what you think, you lose the right to think what you want.

 

As evidenced by history and every dystopian novel ever written, speech and wrongthink are always the first targets of wannabe totalitarian governments. We have decades of authoritarians banning and changing the meanings of words, but that just isn't enough. 

 

The UK government are now in the process of making it illegal to pray silently within 150 metres of an abortion establishment. You can and will be criminalised for your thoughts.

 

Eventually of course we will return to normality whereby government fears the people, instead of the current inverse. Unfortunately and inevitably, it will require multiple civil wars. This will only occur when government heaps on that final straw.

 

That final straw will probably be something relatively innocuous, such as rationing beer consumption (I jest), but it will be something as equally and ludicrously authoritarian that breaks the camel's back.

 

We are currently in Orwell's dilemma, speaking of his 1984 proles, the commoner and mostly unthinking proletariat - "Until they become conscious they will never rebel, and until after they have rebelled they cannot become conscious.”

They already fear the people, hence the militarisation of the police in the US. They know that if the populace ever rebels it'll be them or the people that survive.

 

The UK cops were compromised by Thatcher, IMO, when she made them suppress the workers ( I wonder if it's safe for a cop to live in an ex mining community today? ).

 

Alas, I doubt I'll be alive to see it when it kicks off.

I am only talking about the need for freedom and tolerance which will enable us to talk freely, and express freely, different points of view.

 

I guess you have heard about the Chinese Cultural Revolution which set back China many years, at the time, and destroyed so many lives.

 

And so I ask you:

 

Is the USA and the rest of the western world now engaging in a New Cultural Revolution where, just as in the 1960s in China, nobody is allowed to express ideas, or even to THINK ideas?

 

Sure, back in the day, In China....

During the Cultural Revolution...

Almost all thought was completely controlled by The Party.

 

And, it seems to me that the USA is doing it's best to copy The Chinese Cultural Revolution, but ....

With American Characteristics.....

Do you feel able to speak your mind at university....

Or, for that matter, do you feel free to speak your mind to your WIFE?

 

Just wondering, because...were are obviously now entering a Brave New World of Weird-Speak.

 

Profs are getting banned for discussing issues that once were discussable.

I think that Trump, knowing what he is, might prefer to decamp to Switzerland, rather than to run, once more, for Prez of the USA...
