Truck Crash on Expressway: 16 Vehicles Wrecked, 17 Injured

An incident occurred on the Kanchanaphisek Expressway on the evening of September 22, when a  truck experienced brake failure, leading to a massive collision involving 16 vehicles. The incident left 17 people injured, prompting authorities to close the expressway for over an hour to manage the situation.

 

At around 17:00, it was reported that the multi-vehicle crash took place at kilometre marker 18+600 on the Kanchanaphisek Expressway. Emergency crews were dispatched immediately to aid the injured and clear the wreckage, with traffic halted for more than an hour.

 

 

By 18:30, some lanes were reopened, though rescue teams continued working to remove the damaged vehicles. The use of heavy-duty tow trucks was required to clear the scene and restore full traffic flow.

 

Dashcam footage (below) from one of the vehicles involved captured the moment of the accident. A long line of cars had slowed down near the end of the Chao Phraya River bridge when a 22-wheel container truck, traveling at high speed, failed to stop and plowed into the waiting vehicles. The crash resulted in a chain-reaction pile-up, causing widespread destruction.

 

Among the 16 vehicles involved were sedans, pickup trucks, trailers, and a gas tanker. Cars were scattered across the expressway in what was described as a chaotic scene. The Samut Prakan Emergency Medical Services Command Centre coordinated with Pra Nakhon Radio Centre to dispatch ambulances and volunteer teams from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation to assist the injured. Nearby hospitals were also notified to prepare for incoming patients.

 

In total, 17 people were injured, including the driver of the truck responsible for the crash. Fortunately, all injuries were reported to be minor to moderate, with all victims receiving treatment at nearby hospitals.

Yep, lack of attention by the truck driver most likely.  But as has already been mentioned, the old throw away line... brakes no work.

If he had fallen asleep, or been on his phone, I would have though that hitting the first vehicle would have woken you up/got your attention, to apply the brakes, at no time it seems that the brakes are applied as it comes to a rolling stop, having said that for a complete failure of the AIR brakes, on both the trailer and tractor unit would be very unusual, but the foot valves can fail, then it's time to use the emergency brake, also air operated, and at no point does he seem to change into a lower gear, although that wouldn't be that easy while trying to steer it. Only an inspection of the brake system by a qualified  Truck technician, could revile the truth. Sorry I can't help today cops, as Falang can not, only Thai Mechanics allowed.............

The brakes failed because the muppet didn't apply his foot to the pedal.

 

The air in air-brakes keep the brake shoes off the drums.

 

When air-brakes "fail" due to loss of compressed air, the brakes slam on.

 

The failed brakes excuse always makes me laugh.

A 22-wheeled truck collided with 16 other vehicles yesterday, causing mayhem and gridlock on Kanchanaphisek Road in Samut Prakan’s Phra Pradaeng district.

 

The chaos unfolded around 5pm, yesterday, September 22, on the Bang Phli-Suksawat stretch of the southern ring road, with rescue teams rushing to the scene after receiving frantic reports. The crash forced a complete closure of the road for about an hour as emergency services tended to the injured and police battled to clear the wreckage.

 

The shocking incident created several kilometres of tailbacks, causing a nightmare for drivers heading towards Pak Nam and Bang Na. Thankfully, by 6.30pm, authorities managed to partially reopen the road, bringing some relief to those stuck in the massive traffic jam.

A 51 year old eyewitness, Prasert Ketbung, whose vehicle was caught up in the carnage, described the scene as absolute chaos.

“Traffic was already slowing down when suddenly the huge truck ploughed into several cars, pickup trucks, and even a gas truck.”

 

Investigators are now probing the cause of this catastrophic accident to uncover what triggered the shocking multi-vehicle pile-up.

Brakes failed yeah sure

Poor maintenance is possibly the cause of the failure. The state of trucks in Thailand is disastrous. The vehicles are often extremely old and there seem to be no technical checks, to ensure that the vehicles are kept in good condition.

I saw firsthand a (smaller) truck experiencing a breaks failure in Bangkok, at a traffic light, and wrecking two cars in the line next to mine in the process.

Approximately 120 truck accidents a day in the USA caused by brake failure, 30% of all truck accidents. Are they all making it up over there as well? Not saying the driver in this case is not making it up but if brake failure is that common in the US it is probably more prevalent over here.

So the police jumped in the lorry and checked the brakes did they ?!!  Are the lorries tested after these 'brake failures ?..... if so are the results published ?..... silly questions !!!!

Experienced the stab in the back routine some years ago in PKK province whilst en route to Hat Yai. I was tail end Charlie waiting for a road maintenance crew to allow me to proceed when a ten tonner was required to join the stationery queue. Unfortunately his brakes were not cooperating, at least that was his claim but when he alighted from his cabin he was seen to be pulling up his trousers and adjusting his dress. It could be claimed, if one were so enlightened that the man was pleasuring himself with gay abandon, who is not a person only a desciptor. So we have noted another likely reason for these acts of god which occur so frequently on the roads of this country.

I hate it when they refer to "brake failure" it sounds like the brakes didn't come on. On all these trucks the brakes are permanently on. Should everything be working correctly, then the brakes can be taken off. Hence the system is always OK. It should read, brakes worn out or components worn or broken, hence not stopping the truck.
