Police have arrested on October 5, a notorious conwoman, known as “Nam Nueng,” who had been posing as a high-ranking official to infiltrate the Thai parliament. Dressed in a white uniform adorned with official insignia, she mingled with members of parliament (MPs) and senators, pretending to be part of the political elite.

The suspect, a 47-year-old woman identified as Suwadee (surname withheld), was apprehended following a police investigation after a warrant was issued by the Dusit District Court. She was arrested on charges of impersonating a public official by wearing a uniform to deceive others into believing she had official authority.

The Metropolitan Police, led by Pol. Lt. Gen. Thiti Saengsawang and his investigative team, tracked Suwadee to a hotel in the Lat Krabang district. In her possession were multiple disguises, including a white official uniform with royal decorations, a black cloak embroidered with the words “Parliament,” and another with “Office of the Prime Minister.”

Suwadee’s criminal history spans over a decade, with 14 prior fraud cases to her name, including scams involving construction contracts, investments in businesses, and more recently, impersonating government officials. Her deceptions have netted her millions of baht from unsuspecting victims across the country.

Suwadee’s fraudulent activities date back to 2010, starting with small-scale scams such as issuing bad cheques and pretending to be a contractor. However, by 2017, her tactics evolved, and she began impersonating high-profile figures, claiming to be the niece of a prominent university rector and enticing victims to invest in fictitious business ventures. By 2021, she was posing as an assistant to former Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha, duping individuals into believing she could secure government positions for them.

Among her numerous scams was the infamous “Lung Tu Plus Card” scheme, where she swindled a victim out of 1.7 million baht, promising high returns through an exclusive investment. Her most recent con involved her wearing an official uniform to gain access to parliament, where she posed for photos with well-known MPs and senators.

The turning point in Suwadee’s latest scheme came during a Senate meeting on 20 August 2024, when a senator raised concerns about a suspicious individual wandering the halls of parliament. The senator’s alert led to a police investigation, eventually uncovering Suwadee’s real identity and criminal past.

After fleeing, she sought refuge with a famous fortune teller, moving between hotels in Bangkok to evade capture. However, police surveillance led to her arrest on 5 October. Investigators found official uniforms, political party ID cards, and a Toyota Camry she had used to stash her disguises.

During questioning, Suwadee denied all charges, claiming she had merely borrowed the uniform from a friend to take photographs for her future campaign as an MP. She insisted that a senator, with whom she had personal disputes, was behind the allegations.

Despite her denials, police have confirmed that Suwadee has a long history of fraud. Although she claims to have resolved many of her cases by repaying victims, she is still facing legal battles, including a recent conviction for the “Lung Tu Plus” scheme, for which she was sentenced to three years in prison, currently under appeal.

Authorities are now taking steps to ensure such security breaches do not occur again, with parliament tightening its regulations on access to the building. Suwadee remains in custody as the investigation continues, and she will likely face additional charges for her most recent crimes.
