Dr. Mongkol said the number of casualties was obtained from 47 hospitals under the supervision of the ministry in the five provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Songkhla and Satun.

The Public Health Ministry had spent more than Bt3.7 million in treating the wounded and boosting the morale of families who had lost their loved ones during the period.

The ongoing bloody violence in the deep South resurfaced in January 2004 after a group of terrorists raided an army camp and emptied its arsenal. Since then, killings have occurred on an almost daily basis.
