In a shocking display of vandalism, a man was caught on video smashing a padlock at Yinyom Beach with a hammer, leaving residents in disbelief. The incident occurred late last night, October 15, in the Jomtien area off Thappraya Road, and was captured by a vigilant resident.

Pattaya City officers responded swiftly to the scene, finding minimal damage to the barrier, which is typically locked from 9pm to 6am to deter vehicle access, particularly aimed at preventing groups of fishermen from frequenting the area during these hours.

The incident raised serious concerns, prompting Pattaya Mayor Poramet Ngampichet to take immediate action. He has ordered a thorough investigation.

“We will review the CCTV footage to identify the individual responsible for this reckless act.”

Legal action is expected to follow against the vandal for damaging government property, reported Pattaya Mail.

Mayor Poramet reminded the public of the serious repercussions of such actions.

“Vandalising public property is a criminal offence under Section 358 of the Criminal Code, which can lead to up to three years in prison, a fine of up to 6,000 baht, or both.”

They have some strange laws in Thailand, a smash a padlock, get 3 years in prison.

Did they perhaps lock somebody in at 9pm? A young couple maybe?

Meanwhile killing each other every hour on the road by speeding/red-light running attracts no police attention.

Hmm. 3 years in chokey or £150 fine. I sure could do with a 3 year stretch. But.... Nah, I think I'll go with the fine. (Courtesy My Cousin Vinney).

The locks on this gate and the Dong Tan Beach one are a total pain. It's City Hall. I asked the locker uppers why they started locking them. "Mafia" they said, "Bad guys". The kids used to play all night beach volley ball on Dong Tan. Never any trouble. And of course a great cut through between Soi 5 and Jomtien. I asked the police at the Dong Tan station why they don't warn motorists the gate at the other end is locked. "City Hall" he told me. "Not police". Can sit with a coffee or beer at the big 7, bottom of Soi 5 and watch the cars and bikes confounded by the closure, having to turn round. Course, for bikes, there is a way round.

It's all them Mysteries Of The Orient you'd always heard about. Be disappointing if you didn't encounter any. You'll get used to them in a few more years and just roll with the flow.

Nobody injured, nobody stabbed or shot, nobody died.

So, it was a quiet night 🥱
