      What goes through MY mind is.... a. Chiang Mai is the very best culture I have ever had the pleasure to enjoy. And, maybe it's just the Lanna in me. b. I enjoy the smoking season because: When it's so smokey that the data goes off the charts.... THEN... I have no guilty regrets about remaining indoors, seated at my computer, instead of outdoors hiking in the mountains, and sweating like a pig. c. Everybody knows that the Farang in Chiang Mai are smarter than the Farang living anywhere else in Thailand, on average. Just check the data. Or, just look at what the Farang are wearing in Pattaya compared to what the Farang are wearing in Chiang Mai. c2. Or, just read the Chiang Mai Sub-forum, and compare it to the Pattaya Sub-forum. The difference in intelligence is like....Night and Day. No contest, even. d. Honestly, I have never loved living in Asia as much in my 45 years here, as I now do living in Chiang Mai. I guess, maybe, judging from "Point d" that one must be way above average IQ to understand the many blessings we receive after moving to the best city in Thailand, which is Chiang Mai. e. I hate the way newcomers (Farang) can't even pronounce the "Chiang" in Chiang Mai. Total morons, in my view.

      I have an 18 year old plasma Panasonic bought in UK and brought out here when I emigrated. Still going strong. I did buy a 55 inch LG OLED about 4 years ago which I put in the new house. It was a bargain 25K baht half price because it was last year's model but is fantastic . Reviews say LG make the best OLED on the market. Can't disagree and being a smart TV has pre installed TV apps like Netflix etc.

      Cannot find a working offline translate app

      Thanks for the replies. The Thai language pack had already been downloaded and installed, and it still wasn't working, and I'd already tried uninstalling and reinstalling this and the Translate app, but I did it again, by a slightly different route, and now it works offline for text but not voice input. I have no idea what I was doing wrong. I don't think Google have yet made the voice input an option for Thai. This and Lens are very useful apps here!

      If you cannot beat them then join them. Tourism is about planning and creating products befitting the needs of the visitors. Over the last 40 years I could see the sheer downslide of tourism. The actual numbers of visitors might have gone up but the average spending and average stay per visitor when down the halligally. Study how quality tourism is created; starting with the completely ridiculous visa laws, rules and fees - ongoing changes on that front. Carry on by abolishing ideas like "landing fees" and the likes. Get experts in with a proven track of record, irrespective of race, religion or nationality. Thailand's tourism industry is fç*%"*%d and will not be recovering with this avalanche of Chinese zero-$ bus (and soon train loads) while the Southasian cake of the business shares a small bottle of Chang beer with straws on the staircase of 7/11. Allow foreign guides to help with group tours; they know their people MUCH better than Somchai with his "same same but different" language skills. Ensure better press on transport; exploding busses or other vehicles without breaks, the "scene-fleeing drivers", the drunk Yodsaks steamrollering pedestrians on a zebra intersection ....... But yeah, the dirty farang should shut up and buy what the semi-divine find appropriate. Result is, that the dirty farang go elsewhere, where the product befits his needs, the price-value ration is balanced, where some English is spoken without dual pricing ....... the list is endless. As long as the tourism authority climaxes each and every week over yet another printed lie on figures, facts and revenues which must have been dreamed up in a big smoke of seriously good week; there is no other way to assume this craziness.

      The fines are too small to be a deterrent, usually 200 baht. Take someone's scooter away for a month, it probably affects their livelihood.

      Online reviews are really not very helpful. Positive reviews are often posted by those who have a financial interest in the company being reviewed. Those who have had a bad experience are more likely to post a review than those who have a good or neutral experience. Some negative policyholders' reviews genuinely stem from the insurance company acting in bad faith, others come about because the policyholder did not fulfill their obligations under the policy, especially with respect to disclosure. Hard to figure out which is which based upon what is said in an online review. What every policyholder should know is the legal name, address and contact details of the insurer actually underwriting their policy as well as the financial security of the insurer and the identity of the regulator overseeing them. With the exception of financial strength rating information, this should be contained in the policy itself. Note that the broker's information, while necessary, isn't sufficient. A good way to determine an insurer's financial strength is by looking up ratings by Standard and Poor, AM Best or other rating agencies. While not all insurers submit to such analysis and formal rating, there should be little reluctance on an insurer's part to disclose their audited financial statements. I also believe that a professional insurance broker would be remiss at not having vetted in this manner an insurance company with which they place their clients' business. Reluctance to disclose financial information on the part of the insurer would be a red flag for me. What do the policies issued by WRLife the insurance broker say about the insurer that is actually providing the coverage? Is it consistent with the graphic that was posted above or with the information provided on the Nevis regulator's website? I think it may be difficult to be consistent with both, since the two sources don't appear to show the same information.

Hello, I'd love to get a REGULAR non-naughty oil massage by trained talent for 2 hours in my condo in Jomtien (near Dongtan police box on the beach) for maximally 400 THB per hour. There are many massage shops almost next door, but while on the premises they ask 300 THB per hour, they demand 500 THB for massage in my condo – and they demand 1000 for 2 hours in my condo! No discount.

I need this massage only around 1 or 2 pm, in the hot hours, when massage shops aren't that busy and chock-full of idling talent. Occasionally I talked a manager down to 800 for 2 hours in my condo, but when I actually needed the service, they did ignore my messages or talked themselves out of it. (I believe I am polite, non-smelling, Thai-speaking, not looking like a menace.)

There are outcall massage phone numbers for a rub at home, but they are very expensive. Thai ladies on Thaifriendly offer massage at home, and I may accept that after vetting by video call. But I find them very difficult to track down and to arrive at the time I want, at least in Jomtien at noon (ymmv).

Hanky pank: I want ONLY a regular oil massage in the bright quiet cool of the condo (and not in a chicken shack massage store with broken shower), only starting around 1 pm. I like a masseuse chatty in the first 15 minutes, then rather quiet (she may calmly sing). If the masseuse then offers extras, I might consider (hopefully she isn't pushy). I am aware of the potential mess of an oil massage.

Any tip? Thanks!

You want convenience and home service it will be extra..... unless you strike up a friendship with one who you like the service of in her shop, and see if you can get her to visit after work. I suspect she will not be keen unless you make it worth her while.

Hi all, thanks for your suggestions!

 

I had indeed offers already of massage ladies to visit me after business hours, say starting from 11 p.m., for the same price as in the shop, including the oil. But with a half-ok massage at 11 p.m. and in my home, i'd immediately fall asleep - no good. That time of day is better for live music (the kind that doesn't send me to lala land).

I do not think you should ask for this service at the shop. You are litterally stealing the workforce from the owner and it is probably something that is frowned upon....hence no interest from the staff.

Sure, but what do they believe? If you have been here a while this should be very easy to accomplish... As Celsius says, don't book through a shop. If there is someone who likes you, they might circumvent the shop, but many are loyal to the shop, a quality that many seem to appreciate when in their favor.
