A homeowner in Pathum Thani was alerted to an unusual and alarming intruder by her two cats on the night of October 20. The Volunteer Radio Centre of the Pathum Thani Snake Association was called in to remove an Asian water monitor found in a toilet bowl at a residence in a housing estate near Khlong 2, Soi Bongkot 14, Khlong Luang District, Pathum Thani.

 

When rescue officers arrived, they found the water monitor’s head poking out of the toilet. Using reptile-catching tools, a rescue officer safely pulled out the lizard, which was roughly the size of a child’s arm, bringing relief to the worried homeowners.

 

Mrs. Bong-on, 64, the homeowner, recounted the incident, saying it started around 21.00 when she heard strange noises coming from the bathroom. Her two cats fled the area with distressed expressions, prompting her daughter to investigate. To their shock, they found the water monitor’s head emerging from the toilet. Acting quickly, they shut the bathroom door and called for help.

 

 

“We are so grateful to the rescue team for handling this,” Mrs. Bong-on said. “We were terrified. This is the second time an animal has come into our home through the pipes, though the first time was a snake, which my children managed to catch themselves.”

 

After removing the lizard, the rescue team installed traps to prevent future incidents. The team advised the family to remain vigilant, particularly in checking pipes and closing bathroom doors to avoid such encounters.

 

Volunteer officer Mr. Montien Nakprasert of the Pathum Thani Snake Association emphasised that homeowners should call professionals if they encounter dangerous reptiles, as handling them without proper experience could lead to injuries.

 

The incident serves as a reminder of a previous shocking case in Bangkok, where a man was bitten by a python while sitting on a toilet, underscoring the potential risks of unexpected wildlife encounters in homes.
