The incident occurred on October 29, when a 12-year-old Cambodian girl, identified as “Net,” died from an electric shock while using her sister’s mobile phone, which was plugged into a charger at the time. The incident took place in Ban Khai District, Rayong Province, while the girl was alone in a small hut where her family lived.

According to the girl’s father, Mr. Neun, 36, he was out working in the rubber plantation nearby when the incident happened. He explained that his daughter had been using the mobile phone while it was charging and had fallen asleep holding the device. Upon finding her unresponsive with her hand tightly gripping the phone, he carried her to a nearby shop to seek help. Rescue workers arrived and transported her to the hospital, but tragically, she had already passed away.

The girl’s elder sister, Ms. Nuch, 17, mentioned that the phone belonged to her and that she did not know her younger sister had taken it. When she found her sister, the charging cable was still connected, and the girl’s breathing was faint, with blood visible at her mouth. It is estimated that she had been in that state for about 20 minutes before anyone discovered her.

Authorities from Ban Khai Police Station are investigating the incident.

Girl Dies After Electric Shock While Using Sister’s Phone

Phone not at fault

Maybe headline should read 'Girl Dies After Electric Shock from Phones  Faulty Chinese charger'

Nothing to do with the phone.

....or improperly installed electrical power and outlets. The only thing scarier than the building quality in Thailand, is the electrical work in them.

How does this work? Faulty transformer in charger? how does 12v kill

Can't say without looking at the charger but it's likely the transformer developed a short circuit allowing the 220v to pass through to the phone.

Chargers are usually 5V output.  But a transformer short to the output is a real possibility, especially if the charger got wet.

Checked the outlets in our outside kitchen/pool room earlier this year (22 of them)......none are earthed.....house is okay.

Phone chargers don't require an earth, just active and neutral.

Thanks.

It was more of a comment on the risks over here in assuming things are done properly.

I doubt I would ever check earthing in a UK house.....but maybe I should?

I had a house built in a gated village in Pattaya back in 2002.

I sat down with the developer to choose the house to build on my land, there was a few different designs. I asked how many power outlets are included, he said as many as I want.

So I got my house finished, moved in, all my outlets installed, not one had an earth.

It's a shame, I would have bought a hundred metres of earth wire for his electrician to run to each outlet if I knew before.

I'm still confused as to how this can happen, even if there is a short inside the transformer.

For example, my phone is made of plastic and has a glass screen - it's all non conductive, there is no metal at all on the outside of the phone.

I guess some of these phones are made from metal?

I did  a little digging on this - some phones use Steel, Aluminium and Titanium cases, especially Apple phones.

Never seen worse. My builder didn't correctly ground my house and I get shocks touching some appliances.

It's weird, it's no problem supplying power cable, cutting the concrete walls, adding unlimited power outlets at no cost to the customer, but adding an earth wire for each outlet they overlook.

I see a lot of people use these cheap chargers from 20baht shops
I still use a huge uk Samsung charger that has lasted for years.

i have put in a few Philips sockets around the house that have usb connections just to save people that visit plugging in those cr"p dangerous 20baht death traps
