He killed more of his own populace than Hitler did:

"According to most estimates, Stalin is responsible for the deaths of millions of Soviets during World War II, with figures ranging from around 20 million to upwards of 26 million, including both military and civilian casualties, though the exact number is disputed due to the complexity of calculating war-related deaths and the impact of Stalin's policies during the conflict."

or

"It is impossible to fix in mind and digest this democide. Focusing on the most probable estimate of 61,911,000 murdered, as shown in Table 1.2 it is over four times the battle dead (15,000,000) for all nations in the Second World War.12=3> Indeed, it exceeds the total deaths (35,700,000) from all this century's international, civil, guerrilla, and liberation wars, including the Russian Civil War itself.13=3> Many other comparisons are given in Table 1.2 and Figure 1.5, the purpose of which is to communicate some feel for what the Soviet democide means in sheer numbers." https://www.hawaii.edu/powerkills/USSR.CHAP.1.HTM

With substantial assistance from the Allies. And Allies pressure the West of Germany helped Russia to apply significant pressure from the East. And so far as helping win WW2, Russia demanded the spoils of defeating the Axis in Eastern Europe and Balkans by claiming sovereignty over countries it passed through to defeat the German army. Ultimately, giving rise to the Berlin Wall and a divided Germany for which it RULED as an authoritarian despot.
