A 25-year-old man drowned after reportedly jumping into the Mun Noi River, Ubon Ratchathani, suspected to be under the influence of methamphetamine. His friends, who were with him at the time, revealed he had recently consumed the drug.

Around 15:30 on November 12, Police Lieutenant Prakonsawat Naenkhaek, an investigator from the Muang Ubon Ratchathani Police Station, received a report from Jit Tam Koh Rescue Radio Centre about a man's body found in the Mun Noi River near Wang Daeng Community in Muang District, Ubon Ratchathani. Forensic specialists were promptly dispatched to the scene.

The incident occurred near a water pumping station in the Wang Daeng Community. Rescue workers and divers from the Jit Tam Koh rescue team retrieved the body of Mr. Sutthiphon, age 25, from the river. He was found shirtless, wearing jeans, with no visible injuries or signs of assault. Preliminary assessments suggest he had been dead for approximately 2 to 4 hours.

Mr. Phawan, also 25, who was among those present with the deceased, told police that he, the deceased, and two other friends were sitting in a riverside hut about 100 metres from where the incident occurred. Suddenly, Mr. Sutthiphon inexplicably fled from the hut. Phawan pursued him to the riverbank, where he watched his friend leap into the water before disappearing from sight. Nearby residents, witnessing the scene, quickly alerted authorities, but rescue efforts came too late.

Upon further questioning, police noted inconsistencies in Phawan's account. Under closer interrogation, Phawan admitted that both he and the deceased had used methamphetamine the previous day. He suggested that Mr. Sutthiphon may have been hallucinating, possibly fearing a police presence, which caused him to flee and ultimately jump into the river. Following the drowning, Phawan admitted he had hidden in nearby reeds, fearful of repercussions, until authorities recovered Mr. Sutthiphon's body, at which point he emerged from hiding.

The body of Mr. Sutthiphon has been transferred to the forensic department at Sunpasitthiprasong Hospital in Ubon Ratchathani for an autopsy to confirm the precise cause of death. Phawan, meanwhile, tested positive for drugs and has agreed to enter a rehabilitation program without facing criminal charges.
