Government hospital and it would be not more than a third of what he's being charged.

Perhaps - by Law any hosptial (private or public) are obliged to render medical care in the first 72 hours.

Only them once stabilised can a private facility look at transferring a patient to a government facility if cost becomes a concern.

In this case its not clear if the lad is in a private or government hospital - but, looking at the photo (on first page of this thread) it looks as though he is on a ward in a government hospital.

A fundraising campaign has gathered over £11,000 to support Andy Davis, a 33-year-old British teacher from Staffordshire, who sustained severe injuries in a crash in Krabi.

Mr Davis, an English teacher abroad since 2016, suffered devastating injuries, including the loss of a leg, a shattered pelvis, and a torn bladder. His friend Mike Pugh explained that these injuries required urgent treatment on the mainland, which comes with a hefty price tag.

While some costs may be covered by insurance, it’s estimated that medical expenses, including transferring Mr Davis to Bangkok for specialised care and eventually back to the UK, could exceed £30,000. Mr Pugh expressed hope that the funds raised could also allow Mr Davis to return home for Christmas as originally planned.

However, the situation remains dire. Complications such as infections in his leg and pelvis and concerns about his torn bladder have made recovery more challenging. A further amputation may be necessary, adding to the financial and emotional burden.

Mr Davis's parents have flown to Thailand to assist him, as he remains in and out of consciousness and unable to manage his care or insurance arrangements.

Described as "incredibly laid back" and "genuinely nice," Mr Davis has touched the lives of many during his teaching career, which has taken him to countries like Thailand, Peru, Mexico, and Ecuador. His work recently focused on helping other Brits find teaching opportunities abroad.

Mr Pugh, a close friend for over 20 years, said he was overwhelmed by the support the appeal has received, including donations from former students and friends worldwide. The response has been "heartwarming," reflecting the positive impact Mr Davis has had on others.

Despite the challenges ahead, his friends and family remain committed to ensuring he receives the care he needs, with many rallying to show their support during this difficult time, reported BBC.

Every time the same: Not sufficient insurance. What to do???

Ah yeah, begging other people for money.

It's a shame. And I can't understand why people support those idiots.

Sure, every case is tragic. But begging is more shaming and embarrassing 🥴

very tragic news for the Teacher and the whole family.   I hope the rich cousin, nephew or distant relative hears about his plight and comes to their rescue.

Don't ride the bike next time,   especially in Thailand.

I’ve lived here for 18 years, some more than 1 mill kms on the roads here I’m a pickup truck and scooters and big bikes, had 3 accidents on the scooter, all 3 caused by other people, pulling out and not looking, just had gravel rash in all 3 , and a week in bed at most, to lose a leg he must have hit something very hard and been speeding, maybe slightly drunk, so now he wants the public to pay his expenses….nope!

Below - you did use an IF - but your implication remains clear....

Of course, if he was any other nationality than British you may not have allowed our anti-British bigtory to surface and allude to blaming the injured party...

You still have no idea how you stupidly allow your bias you cloud your judgement an comments.

Yeah, I used an If, and how you read that as an implication, is totally your business. Not my problem, and might also not be what it meant, based on your bias, as you are a pro-Brit Bigot, right.

What crime ???  Jeez you post some complete rubbish...

Yeah, again, Jeez! You took it out of context again, Richard. I must ask if you are this stupid?

Did you see it that I compared one known saying, with a relevant to this, that I made up myself? No, you didn´t understand that, and you didn´t reflect over it. Your fingers where so quick, out in force, to protect your British pride. That, kind of, make you the one who don´t understand, but maybe that is because you have that basic intellect you try to force on others.

I kind of agree with this in principle - however, in the real world this does not work.

This is why in Europe there used to an insurance sharing scheme (which was once E111), was EIHC before Brexit and is now GHIC post brexit...  there are plenty of shared insurance schemes.

Yes, It is, but because of The European Union. GHIC is only valid within EU and in Switzerland. Needless to say, it will also only be valid for citizens of The European Union. Therefore it has no bearing at all, as if AESEAN had the same, then that would only be available within the AESEAN community for the AESEAN citizens. Plans like this does not exist between closed communities, but only within such communities. So, I guess parents, school and governments, will just have to make it work.

There has been an insurance issue in Thailand for decades... So, blaming the people is not a solution... its just playing a dumb blame game - there are solutions and that is mandatory insurance for all visitors and that can be provided on arrival IF it can be done so conveniently.

I don't expected you to agree... Its clear the underlying reason for your objection is because are 'doubling down' on your objection to anything I post because you are butt-hurt fool and lack the capacity to think critically.

You don´t have to to make IF big for me Richard, I can read, see and understand. It´s not playing dumb at all, as there are high quality insurances that do cover and stand for their terms and conditions. To make one available that if government funded, will not work well. They will try their best to not cover everything they possibly can.

If you expect me to agree or not, isn´t anything that concerns me. What you also see as clear, is total BS. The reason is that I simply do not agree with you. Nothing else. But I can see that you have practiced your name calling and degrading of other people intelligence to a professional level. Good job! Please keep it up, as we don´t want you to get rusty.

Could YOUR parents come up with 30k overnight?

What should happen is the the person who hit him. their insurance company SHOULD pay up automatically and quickly. That assumes that the other driver had proper insurance.

If he didn't have proper insurance. then the onus for the payment is on him.

However TiT.

I have a kid around that age, and yes I can find 30k within an hour. I have something called dignity...i don't expect other people to pay my bills. Unless the parents are homeless they can take a personal loan with some guarantee. If they are that poor, their son has no business in Thailand, unless he has proper insurance.

I agree - Governments will just have to make it work...

How ???...     compulsory insurance for all visitors...    how to practically put that in place.

Many options

- one of them floated was to included it into the price of a ticket.

- Another was a 300 baht 'Tourist tax' on arrival

All have their pro's and cons.

Another option is the Governments write off the loss as the medical cost burden of Tourists on the Thai Health care system us just 1% of the revenue of the medical Tourism to Thailand and 0.002% of the income from overseas Tourism on a whole - so the burden cost could easily be written off.

How do you know 'it' [government provide insurance] will not work well ? - you are guessing and cant possibly know that.

The Government scheme works well enough for Thai's - so why couldn't foreigners / tourists and long termers pay into that scheme too ????

It could be included in Visa Costs... Or it could be a 'fee on entry' although that could cause additional chaos and delays on arrival.

Thailand is already floating a 'tourist tax' - so an insurance premium could be added to that - costs have been floated in the past and its only about 300 baht per arrival.

So can I - but not everyone can. Surely you understand that. I don't imagine many of the people I know in the UK have £30k liquid and instantly accessible.

How long does a personal loan take to arrange ?...  note the parents were on a flight over to Thailand as soon as they heard of the incident - loans etc may take weeks to arrange.

No - I'm not pro Brit-Bigot yah daft sally - it should be wholly apparent by now that I'm 'anti-Bigotry' of any kind...

Now - I was daft enough to engage your stupidity yesterday in another thread - You have a personal issue with me because I've called out your stupidity too many times and you think that its personal. Its not, I don't know you and when you make a sensible critically balanced comment its very likely I'll agree with you.

But for now - we've had enough back and forth in the other thread and I'm busier today so don't have the time to get dragged down to your level of stupidity and derail the thread further explaining why you are wrong - I'll just deal with any sensible part of the discussion / debate you have.

So, now we are there again. Richard always gets to tell people they are stupid and derail threads and tell them they are on a lower level. You know, that defines a a person with a huge chip on their shoulder. Then again you believe you are the judge over what is sensible or not, and what is wrong or right. Like I said yesterday, it´s Laughable. Total clownery. You should seek job in a circus.

Do you not read any other articles on here other than news about Brits....

These solutions are the ones already floated by the government (with the exception of writing off the cost burden).

I don't tell all people they are stupid - just the stupid ones on a lower level !!!..

Interesting you mention chip on shoulders - it is you I've called out for having that 'anti-British' chip on your shoulder !!
