Will Fear of Mutually Assured Destruction Keep Us Safe in a New Nuclear Era?

The nuclear genie has been out the bottle since the 1940's, and only the US has ever used them. So the theory of mutually assured destruction has worked fairly well in preventing a nuclear event, although there has been a few near misses over the years. I think we have been lucky so far.

Putin doesn't intend to use a nuclear weapon but his rhetoric is particularly dangerous as words and actions could easily be misinterpreted. The advent of Artificial Intelligence will most likely tip us all over the edge. You won't be immediately affected in Thailand but the chaos and environmental damage caused will make life unbearable. And when that happens the usual norms of society goes out the window. A foreigner in the land of smiles will be fair game for some harsh treatment, because it will be people who look like you that have caused the problem. Something to look forward to in your old age?

But I agree with all of your post

All it takes is one psychopath fool to give the launch order - no urgent phone call to the target state stating "I just made a terrible error".

The technologically "advanced" states all have early warning systems than detect launches a few minutes after the event; within 10 minutes most systems can detect the nature of the warhead and its then current destination.

Check out "Dead Hand System" aka Perimeter, in English.

While the usual suspects will be hurried into shelters, no amount of warning will prevent "the end" for the serfs left outside.

Lucky being the operative word. Given the propensity of the human race to shoot itself in the foot, and given the desire of certain madmen to acquire nukes, IMO it's just a matter of time before it all turns to the brown stuff.

And Westerners supporting Commies and dictators sitting in their free country, oh, but wait...................:whistling:...................

This whole fear mongering of nukes being thrown around is the same as it was in the early stages of cold war 1.0. Now it seems we're in cold war 2.0 it will be the same. Nukes will not be used. Don't be surprised though if Putin does a nuclear test somewhere in Russia in the very near future. Come January 20 this all stops.

The big difference is that the nukes were all big and single. Now we have battleground size and missiles that carry numerous smaller payloads that can be independently sized and targets set in flight. A lot easier to start off on a smaller scale as a "Don't push me message"

Nope - the insane people with access to the nukes thinks nuclear war is "winnable" and that they well survive and be able to rule the world after the nuclear winter blows over and the radiation levels decrease.  The fact that they'll kill over 7 billion people doesn't even faze them.  These are the type of people who think we all are "useless eaters" remember.

Tactical nukes have been around since the 50's and many are still bunkered. As for all big and single the Minute Man was the 1st ballistic missile to carry MIRVs and this was in the 60's. No nukes are going to be used. There's absolutely no reason. The never really was a reason to use nukes. Their reason is for deterrence. Of course the insanity of it all was the weapons race when one side had to keep outdoing the other so they had more deterrence capability than the other until the entire world could be blown up.

Yes, what you say about the tactical weapons is true, but we have never had to face Russia on a battlefield where they could have been used. And with attacks happening on Russia itself, it is a bit different than cold war1.

Face it, Putin will never be allowed to leave Russia as he will be arrested for war crimes. So he is either going to be 'killed' off by a moderate russian, or killed off by KGB style mafia or die and the war never ending.

Every day the reparations bill gets bigger, Russia will have to pay so much as to be totally broke for generations

He is visiting Kasakhstan this week.

I think there is some truth in that. In the US there are US religious groups who think that after the return of Jews to Israel a clock starts ticking that leads to a seven year Armageddon, after which Jesus Christ will return. Referred to as "the rapture". Unfortunately quite a number of them make up an influential part of the Republican Party base, and many of whom sit in Congress. People who make predictions want them to come true.

A nuclear war may not be triggered by "madmen" like Putin and Kim Jung Un, who are more calculating and pragmatic than mad. It is more likely to be due to some religious nut trying to fulfil a prophecy.

What scares me more than Putin are  religious nutters that think they are going to a place called heaven when they die,the Jews the Christians and the Muslims. The ones that believe the end of the world is pre determined.
