Measures should have been taken long ago but all that happens is they kick the can down the road with extension after deadline extension.

The main contractor should be held responsible. But of course money talks and life of workers is even cheaper than chips... RIP to those poor souls who have no voice and need to work under those unsafe conditions. Really sad that no responsibility is taken. If 132 death is a true figure, what a scandal, what a shame that should be. But nothing really serious happens. In any western country the owners/chairman would already be slapped with millions of dollars in fines, a stop of the project till ALL safety measures are met, and most probably in jail for many years for manslaughter.

The main contractor should be held responsible. But of course money talks and life of workers is even cheaper than chips... RIP to those poor souls who have no voice and need to work under those unsafe conditions. Really sad that no responsibility is taken.  Regret to note that the whole stretch of road to Hua Hin will have many more accidents if the Government do not do something about the roads…

If I remember correctly. A few months back after a similar accident the company was penalised in some form. Meanwhile there still are major accidents on this project. Obviously, due to a lack of qualified supervision.

This is near my home. Migrant workers in poorly lit sections waving flags barely visible blocking section of the road for whatever reason. Got to get used to it. We don’t have a choice other than exercise caution.

Steel Beam Collapse on Rama II Road Death Toll Rises to Six

The construction incident on Rama II Road has claimed the lives of six people, as rescue and recovery efforts that are expected to take two to three days. Authorities have temporarily closed the road and diverted traffic and advised motorists to avoid the area.

 

Samut Sakhon Governor Narit Niramaivong and other key officials, including Lt. Col. Santhiti Thammajai from the Provincial Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office, inspected the site. “Our priority is clearing the debris and restoring traffic on this vital route, which serves many commuters,” said Governor Narit. Efforts are underway to coordinate with the construction company to expedite debris removal and road repairs.

 

Lt. Col. Santhiti reported that outbound traffic on Rama II Road has been diverted to Ekachai Road, while the inbound lane remains partially open with two parallel lanes accessible. Authorities have urged the public to avoid the area and follow traffic updates.

 

Deputy Governor Woranat Nurod chaired an emergency meeting with engineers, contractors, and Department of Highways representatives to assess the situation and plan the recovery. Large cranes  have been dispatched to the scene and recovery operations are expected to begin on the afternoon of November 29. “Given the damaged structure, safety will be the primary concern during debris removal,” Woranat stated.

 

Initial investigations revealed that a 100-ton concrete segment and a 50-ton block were precariously hanging at the time of the collapse. Experts suspect issues with the hydraulic pumps or sling riders during the assembly process.
 

Earlier reports that everyone had been accounted for have proved wrong, as two workers still remain missing. USAR (urban search and rescue) teams are still searching the site.

 

The Social Security Office has pledged compensation of approximately 800,000 baht for each deceased worker enrolled in the system, with medical expenses covered for the injured. The contractor has also assured additional financial support for victims and their families.

 

Fatalities and Injuries

 

The deceased workers were name as;:

 

1. Mr. Apiwat Papanthang, 30, Thai, deceased at the scene.

2. Mr. Eya, 37, Myanmar, deceased at Samut Sakhon Hospital.

3. Mr. Chit Gogo, Myanmar, deceased at the scene.

4. Mr. Suthat Boonruang, 31, Thai, deceased at Mahachai Hospital.

5. Mr. Pyao Gogo, Myanmar. missing and presumed deceased at the scene

6. Mr. Aung Thien The, Myanmar, missing and presumed deceased at the scene.

 

Nine injured workers remain hospitalised.

 

Authorities are investigating the cause of the collapse while ensuring the recovery process proceeds efficiently and safely.

The number of failures on this project is criminal. I don't know how the ministers can have any face left. They should all be held accountable in a criminal proceeding. The problem is that the Thai Supreme Court has proven themselves to be a sham hence the government proceeds like processionary caterpillars with the head of the first attached to the ass of the last. 

I worked as an industrial engineer specifying billions of USD construction projects. I worked closely  alongside civil engineering project managers. In 24 years we never had a fatality. Why? Exceptionally strong processes which drove cost in some areas yet the efficiency more than recouped the cost. Forget the cost. We were dealing with human lives. 

I have compared the stats from the rebuilding of the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge and the collapse of the elevated Eisenhower expressway onto the lower section after the Loma Prieta earthquake. 6 people died as a result of injury. Note the project was significantly more complex given aftershocks and fault lines and was completed in ~ 2 years. I also looked at the building of the Taipei elevated motorway. The project was ~ 88 kilometers in length, with significant complexity due to the geological conditions of the Taipei's lakebed, the high seismic activity and far stronger construction standards and materials. The project took 10 years and had the complexity of Taiwanese, Japanese, and Norwegian engineers and construction firms working together. The idea was to give the Taiwanese firms experience in these types of complex infrastructure projects. There were a few fatalities yet not as many when compared to the lower complexity of the construction of  Rama 2.  This indicates the there appears to be extraordinarily poor oversight at the levels of  ministry,engineering,  project management, and on sight management. This is a total failure on a critical piece of Bangkok's infrastructure. Once again the hierarchial nature of Thai management delegates without leaving the office except for police escorts to sights for selfies indicating involvement. It begs the question "Are you incompetent or corrupt". The vice PM Anutin is a civil engineer. What do you have to say Mr. Vice PM?

All management should get their butts out of the office and on the street 24/7. The public deserves an honest Failure Mode Analysis and Corrective Action Plan prior to commencing further activities. My condolences and best wishes to the victims and families of a clear abdication of public management.
