New Yorkers Divided but Lean Toward Supporting Trump’s Deportation Plan

A recent Siena College poll has revealed that a majority of New Yorkers are in favor of President-elect Donald Trump’s controversial proposal to deport millions of undocumented immigrants, a plan that was a central theme of his presidential campaign. This includes an unexpected finding: nearly half of Latino respondents and a significant number of self-identified liberals support the measure.

The survey, conducted between December 2 and December 5, involved 834 registered voters and has a margin of error of approximately four percentage points. The results indicate that 54% of respondents across the state believe New York should align with Trump’s deportation agenda, while 35% think the state should oppose it. The data underscores a deep divide across demographic and political lines, with support reaching surprising corners.

Among Democrats, 38% expressed approval for the deportation plan, compared to a whopping 87% of Republicans and 54% of independents. Gender also played a role in shaping opinions, with 61% of men backing the plan versus 49% of women. Opposition among women stood at 38%, slightly higher than the 31% of men who opposed it. Racial differences were less pronounced, though still notable, with 56% of white respondents, 51% of Black respondents, and 47% of Latino respondents showing support. Additionally, a striking 30% of self-described liberals expressed agreement, defying expectations given Trump’s often polarizing policies.

The context for these numbers may lie in the strain the ongoing migrant crisis has placed on New York City. Since the spring of 2022, more than 224,400 migrants have entered the city’s intake system, creating a financial burden estimated at $6.1 billion. Although the pace of arrivals has slowed, with 11 emergency shelters closing over the past six weeks, over 56,000 migrants remain in the shelter system as of late November.

Mayor Eric Adams has also adopted a tougher stance on immigration in recent months, particularly when addressing migrants who have been accused of crimes. Speaking last week, he stated, “My position is people who commit crimes in our city, you have abdicated your right to be in our city, and I am open to figure out the best way to address that. Those who are here committing crimes, robberies, shooting at police officers, raping innocent people, have been a harm to our country.”

Adams’ comments reflect growing frustration among many city residents and officials as they grapple with the challenges posed by the influx. The poll results suggest that this frustration may be fueling broader support for more stringent immigration policies, even among groups typically resistant to Trump’s rhetoric.

As the state continues to navigate these tensions, the poll highlights the complexities of public opinion on immigration—a deeply divisive issue with implications that reach far beyond party lines.

Illegal is illegal. Support Trump and get rid.

I wish most European politicians including the UK had some of his resolve regarding illegal immigration

Saying and being able to do are worlds apart.

A few hundred , maybe . Millions ? ...I doubt it.

He is not going to do it as it will wreck the economy and it is just too expensive an agenda. All hype just like his wall. Mexico will pay for it and by only a small fraction built during his tenure.

He may not be successful for various reasons, but I'm pretty sure the people he will be deporting don't do much to help the economy, in any event.  They're costing the taxpayers big money.

All he'd have to do is quit feeding and housing them (on my dime), and millions would have no choice but to Remigrate.  Which seems to be a thing in Europe now...  Remigrate.

Watch the wall get built again after Joe sold it off for pennies on the dollar.

As Homan said if you don't let ICE arrest them at the jail in custody which would be the safest conditions. That ICE officers will find them at large and anybody harboring them will be arrested.

During his first presidency, Trump added 64 km of wall to the existing 1044 km. Biden then added another 30 km by closing gaps.

The total length of the border between Mexico and the USA is 3145 km.

Thanks for my laugh of the day, with your daft fantasies.

Trump was opposed then he isn't now. He has taken America by storm. Nobody is going to go to the border and cut razor wire now. Game. Set. Match.

What is the "plan"?

Trump and Miller have said a lot of things, but have they offered a "plan", actions, timeline, goals/objectives, budget.

To start by deporting criminal aliens. Preferably directly from jails.

Are you still dreaming the Mexicans are going to pay for a wall? Where's the money coming from?

I am not worried about how it is funded. You seem to be concerned that it is going to work,. I guess we cancel transsexual Peruvian studies and things like that.

That's bound to happen when they release criminal aliens into the community at large.

Those are the ones with jobs, correct?  The rest cost everyone big money.  And the country is almost bankrupt as it is.

Is that why NYC mayor Eric Adams requested $12 billion in federal funds to care for their 110,000 undocumented immigrants?  That's $36K a head, per annum.

That's kind of the opposite of "contributing".

That was a kid torn from his family and deported to Cuba under Clinton.

It really is irrelevant to me whether it works or not.

I guess a study into the mental health of MAGA supporters needs no funding, that ship sailed on January 6, 2021.

Undocumented immigrants can easily find jobs that Americans don't want especially in agriculture and construction. Employers just need to verify the identity and work eligibility. They work and pay tax but not entitled to social secruity and medicare benefits. No the country is not bankrupt as it is but they actually contribute economically.
