EV Charger Recommendations

Hopefully purchasing an EV with a 82.5KWh battery capacity.

We have 3 phase supply, but at the moment only single phase to the garage which will be upgraded to 3 phase when we install the solar.

So initially we would have a single phase charger then hopefully with the same charger re-configure to 3 phase.

We have a 60 A mains 3 phase breaker and 45A PEA supply.

Cable is 1x25mm.

If we configured the charger to 7KW charge, that would deliver 32A charge and take 12 hours (from 20% to 80 battery charge).

The charger would eventually be charging from the 3 inverters or battery if I go full solar.

Any thoughts on a charger? and hope my maths is OK.

82.5kWh sounds like it could be a BYD Seal, that's the size of my battery and it came with a free wall charger and installation. 

 

I have off-grid solar which powers the house and 2 EVs.

 

I've never had 3 phase so can't be any help on that one. 

 

If I run the battery down to 20% I tend to charge it back over a few days.

Decided on a 7kW/23A single phase charger.

Just waiting for any responses on brand recommendations..

There are many brands on Shoppe and Lazada.

That should be 32A.

 

My PEA installation is 3 phase 15/45.

What are your thoughts of squeezing  32 to 40A out of my system if the pool pump and EV charger are in at the same time.

 

I think OK.

 

I will buy the BYD 7 kV charger from Lazada or Shopee.

I have the same question as carlyai. But you guys in the EV forum are always so focused on cars rather than electrical questions ...

 

May I ask what is the reason you kept the car charger on single phase?

 

I'm thinking of a car port the style Crossy has built. So seeing these 3 phase inverters now being not much more expensive than single phase, I thought this has advantages if you parallel 2-3 of them. The currents on the AC side  would be in a region I'm comfortable with, where with 10+ kW on single phase seems already a bit high for me.

Probably because most people have 1 phase electric at the house.  Auto maker supplied Wall box charging cables (7+kWh) work fine with 1 phase, as does the emergency/granny charging cables (2+kWh).

 

If charging overnight, more than enough for most folks daily driving needs.   Easily adding 100-150 kms daily overnight.

Not sure where to post this, here or on  the alternative energy forum as Crossy is a great source of info on anything electrical.

 

When I had a 7kW AC powdered EV and a 3.5kW AC powered PHEV I could make enough power from solar to charge them both at the same time

 

 

Now I will have 2 x 7kW AC chargers going at the same time.

 

I was thinking of adding 5kW of PV+inverter and possibly a battery to purely run an EV charger. So I'm looking for a charger that will charge with whatever power it's supplied with.

 

I know the MyEnergi Zappi can supply variable current in real time based on whatever excess power is being exported to the grid.

 

Another option would be a couple of granny chargers.

 

I know that you can buy variable voltage chargers, but I'm not sure if they change dynamically or have to be set.

 

Any thoughts?

@Bandersnatch Still doing my research, but I think ABB have dynamic charging and also the Feyree.

I'm leaning towards the Feyree as they have them from China and Lazada so think buying through Lazada may be better if a problem.

I just bought the Feyree 3 phase charger and some breakers.

Was a bit hesitant as no one else has written about that brand.

I had a Feyree charger and attached an industrial plug to it, i got the polarity wrong and it destroyed the charger.  I'm not a fan of Feyree.

 

I have a single phase 15/45 meter, I also have 18kw of grid-tied inverter and only charge when the solar is enough to make it free, I typically charge at 32 amps.  Car is a Seal AWD.

Ohhh that's no good, but bit late for me as I just ordered one.

What do you use now?

It's not really a charger but a box (expensive box) to connect to the car internal charger, as you probably know. Seems it must have a few interlocks and Pulse Width Modulation generator.

I have a few chargers on blue 16amp & 32amp plugs, one of them with a 10m tail on it for traveling, but mostly use the ABB Terra box that came with the car, I fitted it myself as I wanted a 32amp plug/socket between it and the consumer unit.

 

At the Chiang Mai house we have the wall box that came from MG, it needs unlocking with an RFID card every time you use it, again, there is a 32amp plug/socket between it and the consumer unit.

That ABB box has good specifications but expensive for don't know what...just the brand name?

I have an ABB EV charger that was supplied free with my BYD Seal. It's a good charger but I don't think its a smart charger.

 

I have decided to go ahead with a second stand alone solar system consisting of a 6kW inverter and a 10kWh battery. I will be able to run 2x3kW chargers for my EVs while my main solar system is charging my home batteries. When the house batteries are full I can switch to 2x7kW EV chargers.

 

A secondary feature of the second solar system is that it will provide backup power to my master bedroom and bathroom, meaning I will have backup power for aircon, lights etc.  if my main solar system goes down.

 

I have already made my 7kW chargers a little less dumb. Here is a video I made explaining what I did
