Bought Zip Lock bags in Lotus this week. Just used one, and see it has a Use By date, 3 years, printed on them. WHY?

While they last hundreds of years in a landfill before they degrade, the manufacturer seems to think they need to be replaced after three when stored in a kitchen cabinet.

What could possibly be at work here?

Likely to comply with a regulation in some country.

It's a food storage product and some country probably has a law that the manufacturer has to give it some expiration date and test that it works for that long.

Did you buy  genuine Ziploc brand (part of the SC Johnson group)  bags or a generic  "ziplock" brand?  The Ziploc sandwich bags I bought here in the U.S. don't have a "use by" date printed on the bag or the box that contains them.

No, made in Thailand, or maybe China.

It could be the manufacturer is woried the plastic used in the bags will break down when stored in Thailand's heat and humidity.

Call me a rebel, but "use by" dates are a socially engineered concept, and should be ignored. :coffee1:

Exactly so, all utilised by manufacturers to sell more products. I see sell by dates on jars of Honey, packets of salt, etc. All that is needed is common sense. By all means put a date of manufacture on products, and let the adult consumer decide.
