IMO the answers could lie in taxation, and consensus.

Plastic waste has been found at the bottom of the Marianas Trench. Microplastics are in our bodies.

Subsidize and incentivize biodegradable plastics, every step of the way. Tax the daylights out of any plastic which is not biodegradable.

The Montreal Protocol of 1987 was agreed on by most nations, to eliminate the use of ozone-depleting chemicals, which were destroying the ozone layer. Its success can be measured by the fact the ozone layer is slowly recovering to pre-1980 levels.

Consensus on limiting the use of fossil fuels is a much more difficult task, due to a rearguard action by fossil fuel companies. Like plastics, taxation may be the answer. Nations that drag their heels get left behind.

I don't have a problem with people getting rich. When it is at a cost to the environment, it is time to say whoa.

The first intellectual attractive post so far .

Thanks for that .

Most plastics are NOT biodegradable.  So basically you will taxing most all plastic.

More taxes never solve anything, as they simply waste more, if they have more.

Non bio-degradable plastic is too cheap . It needs to become expensive , and the problem disappears alone ...

There are 7 companies currently producing biodegradable plastics, mostly based on polylactic acid.

Correctly applied, taxes on non-biodegradable plastics should be used to clean up the mess they make. It's a matter of political will and absence of corruption to achieve that result.

Our current economic models are flawed, when have you seen one that takes account of environmental costs?

I have worked for a range of companies. They had one common factor - they all cheated when it came to their environmental licences.

There is nothing wrong with plastic.  It's how it's used (food industry), and how it's disposed of, landfill or sea.

Any plastic not recycled, should be burned for energy. Problem solved.

Taxes ... I would have no problem pay more, though prefer a flat tax (income), but the problem is, the govt (USA) wastes most taxes, mismanage their budget, and corruption rules.

So NO, I don't want to give them any tax money, and main reason I left the USA.  I literally live  here / TH, on what my monthly tax burden would be in the USA, approximately say $476 / ฿16.3k, (as calculated for 2024), from actual cost.

Pretty sure just my real estate taxes would be that amount.  If having one of the last houses I owned there.

Time for a 'System Change'. and should be how they spend our taxes collected.   That's the problem, not that they don't already have enough.

I think that depends on how you define good. The other day, I did not step on a roach. That was good. But I think Saint Peter would prefer that I devote my attention to humans.

Agreed, but I must say that I don’t see shades of Hitler in what he wrote….more like Pol Pot.  I wonder who he would choose for his culling?

Would he step up to be the first in line?

Probably not, because he has “analyzed it and has the answer”.  If only all of us other useless eaters would just fall in line.  No sacrifices to be made on his part….well….except sell his luxury house and of course….no mention of donating the proceeds even though he already “has enough”.

I noticed that he also seemed to point fingers only at the upcoming administration.  Maybe if Trump appointed a more diverse and worthy group of henchmen like dear leader Kamala would have….because….joy!

But ne’er ye worry.  He has the answer and can pontificate and lord over the rest of us from his island paradise while stroking his army of loyal dogs.

Wow thats deep. How intellectual you are, expressing your own idea with such descriptive use of language.

Please, allow me to respond: You have already demonstrated your ideology here, viz: an elitist loathing of humanity that exists in a moral vacuum. Perhaps the Jellyfish is brainless, but it does not set itself above others and seek to destroy them for a false ideal.

Meme that.

You know I’m a political agnostic…..and I was having an adventure at that particular time back in the US where I had to literally escape the clutches of wokedom, sometimes in the middle of the night.  Thankfully I escaped back to Thailand before the election….only to have to hastily depart for Da Nang where I’m wating out the 180 day Thai tax rule.  You should come on over….boy do I have some stories to tell!

Speaking of taxes (as the OP seems to be quite fond of them for others)…do you think he’ll pay them to Thailand for living here over the 180 day limit?

I’m betting not….but surely, if he has 80k to spare feeding dogs, he must have enough to pay his fair share.  Or will he choose the “rules for thee but not for me” that I find so prevalent in the mindset of the filthy leftists that I have known throughout life?

Dont be an agnostic any more. Cant come to Vietnam, on my way to BKK LOL

For one time ,that seems true ...

" The word agnostic means "without knowledge," basically meaning that you believe you don't know enough to make an educated decision on what's true. "

Exactly.  I don’t trust either side and can’t extract enough truth from the little information available so I don’t vote.  One thing that I do agree upon is that people (mostly) aren’t honest.  Both fundamentally and intellectually.

My experience with leftists however, is that they want to dictate what I think, jab me with vaccines I don’t want/need, force their pronouns upon me etc etc so I can be certain to not join their team of degenerate mid-wits.  They are the ones who will turn on you and stab you in the back.

One is no longer allowed to be neutral and objective.

As the brilliant Mark Twain said:

It ain't what you don't know that gets you into trouble. It's what you know for sure that just ain't so.

Only an imbecile would denigrate someone claiming they don't yet have enough information to make a choice. Because none of us know anything with certainty, except those few things that can be mathematically and physically proven. And even physics is open for re-evaluation if our most fundamental models of reality change.

Being agnostic implies the highest degree of true intelligence.
