Thai Senate Approves Landmark Ban on Violent Child Discipline

Thailand's Senate has unanimously approved an amendment to Section 1567 of the Civil and Commercial Code, prohibiting abusive or harmful parental punishment. This landmark decision aligns with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, emphasizing disciplinary measures that protect a child's physical and mental well-being and uphold their dignity. Parents can still guide their children but must avoid violence or harm. The amendment, aimed at curbing domestic violence and fostering child protection, now awaits approval from Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra and royal assent for enactment.
