So... you are right, people from the USA classify themselves as American, and that was my point - is it not somewhat arrogant to 'take over' the name of the continent in which another 34 nations exist ?

You seem confused yourself.   There is not ONE continent called America.  There is North or South America.  The US is in N. America and I’m pretty sure there are not 34 nations there?

And Europeans do often say they are European, just like you did above.

My wife's family literally came from China on the boat. They are Chinese. Her parents were granted Thai citizenship through some agreement in the 50's, I'm not sure.

Funny how although I am a Canadian citizen Britman also asked me stupid question several times like.... aren't you a Serb?.

Or how about when a Mohammed with a British passport commits a crime in Thailand everyone in unison goes "he doesn't sound or look British to me".

What a sad bunch of nobodies, lol....

The demonym for a person from the United States of America is American. The term "American" comes from the country's official name, the United States of America. It's a simple, easy-to-pronounce way to refer to people from the USA.

You're Welcome

In total, in North America, there are 23 officially recognized independent statesList of countries in North America in alphabetical order (links don't work anymore today)

I agree if you ask a person where they are from, they don’t tend to respond “I am European” however there are plenty of situations when they do …for example I am scrolling through Reddit just now and a title of a thread is “ My vacation plan in America as a European”.  Note they did not say, as an Italian, Irish, or whatever.  But they could have.

Not confused at all...  he didn't say he's 'North American'...     just 'American' - hence the whole of the Americas

There are 23 countries in North America and 12 counties in South America (35 in total).

They have more <deleted> like that, claiming to be world champions in baseball, American football while there isn't an organized championship with other countries.

My comment wasn't meant to be a bash against those originating from the USA...   more minor pish-taking...

... And this whole MAGA thing... I think its great that the Yanks have a president who wants to make 35 nations great again... very unselfish I'd say !!!  :whistling:

America the Beautiful Lyrics

 O beautiful for spacious skies,
 For amber waves of grain,
 For purple mountain majesties
 Above the fruited plain!
 America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
 From sea to shining sea!

 O beautiful for heroes proved
 In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved
 And mercy more than life!
 America! America!
God shed His grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
 From sea to shining sea!

Not united at all.  Guess you never heard of the tenth amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

Politicians or European government workers do, others don't.

1. The Caribbean Islands

2. Central America

Everything from Colombia down to Argentina made up South America

(agreed - no need to get into a battle / this is informative for those who think America is the USA).

The term "America" can refer to two continents: North America and South America. Together, they are often referred to as the Americas

There are 35 independent countries in the Americas (23 in North America & 12 in South America).

The continent of North America includes:

- Canada

- United States

- Mexico

- Central America (the countries connecting North and South America)

- The Caribbean islands

The continent of South America includes:

- The continent to the south of Central America, connected by the Isthmus of Panama.

--------------------

The 23 independent countries of North America:

- Canada

- United States

- Mexico

- Belize

- Guatemala

- El Salvador

- Honduras

- Nicaragua

- Costa Rica

- Panama

- The Caribbean

- Bahamas

- Cuba

- Jamaica

- Haiti

- Dominican Republic

- Antigua and Barbuda

- Saint Kitts and Nevis

- Dominica

- Saint Lucia

- Barbados

- Saint Vincent and the Grenadines

I think at that time Mexico was so insignificant it was merely a pimple on the *** of the US, sandwiched between North and Central America 😀😀

Or I could just have completely forgotten about Mexico.

Whatever the reason, North America did not consist of 23 Countries.

I'm trying to ascertain, at what point from my skool years, until today, did they cease to be Central America and the Caribbean Islands and become part of North America.

Never...   There have only ever been seven continents.

- Asia

- Africa

- North America

- South America

- Antarctica

- Europe

- Oceana

There are sub-divisions in North America which cause confusion perhaps because those from the USA think Canada and the USA is North America.

- North America (Mainland Core - USA Canada, Mexico),

- Central America

- The Caribbean

- Bermuda

- Greenland is a confusing one (Geographically its in North America... Politically associated with Europe)

In much the same way Europe has its subdivisions.

- Northern Europe

- Southern Europe

- Western Europe

- Eastern Europe

- Central Europe

- Southeastern Europe

In my Skool years I can recall North, Central and South America. Which you have highlighted above.

Post Skool and pre internet days I lived and worked in one of those ' Central American ' Countries. The Postal address contained the words " Central America '

In post internet days, having frequently travelled the caribbean islands, over a period of a decade, I have never heard of them being referred to as North America, only ever the Caribbean / Caribbean Islands ( Cannot speak for Cuba, never got there )

So it is not just those from the USA that think North America consists of Canada, the US, and a pimple called Mexico. This was also my understanding and Central America and theCaribbean Island were 2 entities seperate from North Amerca.

To put in a European context, the Americas were subdivided into North, Central, South and the Caribbean Islands.

And until I read your post earlier, I was still of that belief

You are not incorrect - The North American Continent is subdivided...     but those countries within those Subdivisions are still in North America.

Regarding postal addresses - I can't speak for postal addresses in places such as Costa Rica, however, everywhere else I have travelled and work, only the 'Country' has been necessary when writing an address, not the continent or sub-division of continent - but I can see how local preferences may influence that.

That just comes down to education, assumption, individual understanding etc...   there's never been any reason to question that in the past - I'd guess that this same 'assumption' is made by many... But Central America & The Caribbean are part of the North American continent.

Oceana and Australasia is another which throws out a curve ball for many...  As does Greenland...

Sure, that is why I made my initial comment. Until today I had never heard of Central America or the Caribbean being part of North America

Everyday is a skool day, as they say.
