In a dramatic early morning incident, a car and a pickup truck plunged into a drainage canal beside the Ram Inthra Expressway, Bangkok leaving five people injured. Rescue workers rushed to the scene to provide immediate assistance and transported the injured to nearby hospitals.

The accident occurred at 00:10 on December 24, near the entrance of Soi Praditmanutham 21 in Lat Phrao district. Police investigator Pol. Sub-Lt. Ekphop Painuea from Chokchai Police Station was alerted to the crash and arrived at the site alongside volunteers from the Poh Teck Tung Foundation.

At the scene, a black Toyota Cross SUV with Bangkok plates was found half  submerged in the canal, which was approximately five metres wide. The vehicle, damaged at both the front and rear, had tipped onto its side. Two women, a 65-year-old mother, Mrs. Akiraporn and her 30-year-old daughter, Ms. Thanisorn were trapped inside. Both women suffered minor injuries and were unable to get out of the car, half filled with water, until being rescued by emergency responders. They were taken to Paolo Chokchai 4 Hospital.

Nearby, a grey Toyota Vigo pickup truck, also registered in Bangkok, was discovered upside-down completely submerged. Three men had been in the pickup, Mr. Komon, 33, and two 24-year-olds, Mr. Kittisak and Mr. Phongsathorn. All three were able to escape the pickup by themselves having sustained minor injuries, but were still in the drainage canal. They were treated for the effect of water intoxication, having swallowed too much water and two were sent to Paolo Chokchai 4 Hospital, while the third was transferred to Phyathai Nawamin Hospital.

According to a rescue volunteer, both vehicles were found submerged in the roadside canal upon their arrival. They promptly rescued the five victims, all of whom were conscious and able to communicate, before transporting them to the hospitals for further treatment.

The crash site is a known trouble spot due to the incline leading up to a bridge. High-speed driving has been identified as a frequent cause of crashes in the area. Initial investigations suggest that excessive speed and a possible collision between the vehicles may have caused the drivers to lose control and crash through the canal’s barrier.

Pol. Sub-Lt. Ekphop stated that all five individuals remain hospitalised and that further inquiries will be conducted once their conditions improve. Preliminary information indicates that both vehicles were heading home at the time of the incident. Footage from a dashboard camera in the Toyota Cross is currently under review by police to determine the exact sequence of events.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the incident.

They disobey speed limits, stops signs, red lights, laws, rules, regulations, etc......So yeah, barriers might work.
