Was in Vegas 2 weeks ago.  Just sad at the chubby gals in sparkly dresses.  Lots of Chinese like so many maybe 30% of total. And the Chinese were slimmer mostly.   But the obesity I saw was alarming.   Attended a minor league baseball game in the summer.  I was shocked at how many morbidly obese who had trays of unhealthy food.   It almost seemed liked they came for an excuse to be able to eat junk as that's all on offer.  Plus so many were fat so they felt at home.

To me, this is disastrous. And if the rise continues, more and more people will suffer from diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease in Thailand than ever before. 

 

Meanwhile, there were hardly any gyms at all in Bangkok when I first came here and now they're everywhere, many are also open 24 hours. So a lot more people are exercising, at least a little bit anyway when they go to these places, but obviously it's not helping them very much. It's the worsening diet and the massive caloric surplus that so many are consuming that is causing this rapid increase in obesity.

 

Not to mention, the aesthetic appeal of the locals is declining rapidly too. I rarely see women with attractive faces and figures anymore, largely due to this growing obesity problem. It’s really saddening.

 

And it’s not just Thailand. This same trend is happening throughout Southeast Asia. Malaysia is in an even worse situation. Singapore is struggling too, and the Philippines isn’t far behind. I wonder where this is all leading and if it will greatly accelerate the mortality rate in Thailand over the next decade.
 

To me it would seem that Thailand is losing its edge as a place known for beautiful women in Southeast Asia too. For me personally, I find that I rarely see Thai women that even cause me to turn my head anymore.

Fat people basically have very little self respect, it's a proven fact.

 

Obesity is a psychological problem that has plagued the west and is now corrupting the Thai.

Monkeys eat a whole lot of bananas. Either their digestive systems are different or they know something we don't.

I agree, it's a public health disaster and it has been a very visible change over the last two decades that I've been here.

 

I think this is where the nearly complete lack of parenting really backfires - left to their own devices, many kids simply prefer the smartphone / TV / game PC couch potato lifestyle over a more physically active one. And an obese teenager will usually be obese for life.

Monkeys can get diabetes. Some species are more prone than others.

 

IMO the saving grace of fruit is its sugar composition. It is usually 50:50 fructose and sucrose.

 

Sucrose is sugar, 50:50 fructose and glucose. Glucose is the sugar that requires insulin, and shows up on blood tests.

 

Fructose is processed by the liver. OTOH, fructose overload can cause non-alcoholic fatty liver disease ( NAFLD ).

 

Lactose is present in milk, regular yoghurts, and soft cheeses. It is also processed by the liver, again potentially causing NAFLD.

 

Hard cheeses contain very little lactose, I eat as much as I want.

 

People drinking skim milk, marketed as healthy , is ironic. Skim milk is actually enriched in lactose.

Exactly. The root of the problem is increased affluence in certain areas and a misguided perception that what is good for the west is good for them.

The likes of McDonalds, KFC & Pizza Hut have a lot to answer for.

Quite. In recent years when I have been back there has supposed to have been a cost of living crisis. The number of grossly obese, predominantly women, stuffing their faces in Wetherspoons would bring that into dispute.

It is a bit unfortunate that the Thais seem to think that what is good for the UK is good for them.

Actually,  I believe it's all the chips and candy.  As you, when I first came to Thailand you'd see very few over weight people.

Over the years you could see the kids are getting heavier. All the adverting on TV and parents with no education on nutrition let their kids eat candy, chips and coke all the time.

I wouldn't worry about fruit. I normally eat a few pieces of fruit a day. I never worry about if it's a high glycemic fruit or not. Mostly I eat bananas, apples, cantaloupe, and pineapple.  Sometimes some watermelon or oranges. 
 

The main point though is that fruit has its sugar embedded in fiber, and the fiber slows down the absorption of the sugar by the body and helps to prevent the insulin spikes that would convert it to fat.
 

So as long as you're only eating a few reasonably sized pieces of fruit a day, then I wouldn't worry about it at all and I doubt that it's going to make any difference in terms of weight or body fat percentage in general. 
 

If you're really worried about it, then with things like bananas don't eat more than one a day. But on some days, I eat two or three. It just depends.

Carbo-phobia is way out of hand. Individual metabolism varies, as does the amount of exercise people do.

 

I eat a ton of carbs---pizza, pasta, French bread---though I also aim for 2 gm/kg/day of protein. I hit the gym 6 days a week for resistance training and cardio/HIIT.

 

I just had a complete physical. HbA1c is 5.2. Tryglycerides are 66 mg/L, while thyroid and liver readings are normal.  HDL-C is 68. Body fat is 11%. Doctor did not say to lay off the carbs.

 

Carbs do not seem to be the bogeyman those chiropractors claim.

Very true, people get on these weird keto type diets when if they had an ounce of self discipline they could cut out the rubbish junk food, you just have to read these threads to see how mixed up they are

but white flour and even whole grain flours can be considered junk food by many, including myself. as they are inflammatory. 

 

white rice and sweet potatoes might be better more benign carb options, along with fruit.
