Just watched one of those silly set-up programmes about Pawn Shops in USA, and a guy came in with a Fender Strat from, he said, 1952, but the date on the body said 54.

Got me thinking about the over 200,000 Strats alone which were made in the 60s. Then all the other Fenders, Gibsons, Rickenbackers etc etc.

Where did they all disappear to? It's not something you would throw away or burn, yet so very few seem to surface.

OK, old cars rot away and are crushed or are crashed.

We all know someone(s) who have a vintage guitar in their closet.  I have one friend in Galveston that has a dozen on his wall.  Probably $50-$100K worth.  Maybe more.

200,000 may sound like a lot, but that's just one for every 1500 Americans.

Cars OTOH, cost money to care for, to store, and to maintain them.

I have a vintage Martin D18 and a Vintage Guild Bluegrass D40 from around 1960 made in the original guild factory at Hoboken New Jersey as well as a collection of vintage Yamaha acoustic guitars.

If you can remember that far back KannikaP I played the Martin with you one time in a jam 🙂

Yes I remember, at Ryan's place in Pattaya. Did I have my 83 Strat, or my 72 Jazz bass?

Even a million old guitars sounds like a lot.  But that's one per hundreds of closets.

I once owned a late '50s Les Paul.  I bought it from someone desperate for cash, and sold it when I was desperate for cash.  Never even learned how to play it...  I did the same with a Martin acoustic.  Bought it, then sold it.  Back then, it was similar to Thai people with their gold.  Not quite as liquid, but almost.  I shudder to think what they're worth today.  (That was also long before the interweb and EBay)

I forgot to mention the 1968 Gibson RB250 five string banjo and the two vintage Ibanez five string banjos I also own, seems like everything I own is vintage now including me  😀
