I alternate between fiction and non fiction.

Just finished Marcus Aurelius "The meditations" very impressive philosophy of a Roman Emperor. 

Just started "Brave New World" Aldous Huxley. Very enjoyable read on the dangers of social engineering and the persuit of pleasure as the primary objective of life.

Atlas Shrugged, I've been saying I would read it for five years and now I've started, enjoyable but heavy going.

Lee Child's latest Jack Reacher novel, In Too Deep.

 

Unfortunately, it is evident Mr. Child has run out of plot ideas, and is now churning out potboilers.

 

It happens to the best of authors.

I read all Reacher novel until the moment Lee Child asked his brother to write them. One of those was enough to stop reading. Sad.

I have been trying to find some of the earliest books from Paul Theroux, before he became popular. But that is difficult in Thailand. The latest book I read from this author was "Burma Sahib." This book is an interesting read on George Orwell's early years as a an officer in colonial Burma.

Papillon was my favourite autobiography for donkeys years until i found out it was mostly fiction.Still a great read and beats the film hands down.

Colin Falconer was my discovery of the year in 2024. I just love it when authors blend historical fact with page turning fiction and come up with a literary feast.

 

I've just finished 'Stigmata', a novel set in a little known period in French history during the persecution of the Cathars in south of the country. As usual with Falconer, Some great twists in the story and a completely unexpected ending. (plus an epilogue to bring you back down to Earth again)

 

I've already downloaded my next book, 'A Vain and Indecent Woman', so I'm all set to go.

Before retiring to Thailand more than a dozen years ago, I bought a Kindle while still in Canada.  I knew that it would be a literary life-saver once here.  Best thing I ever did.  For example, I just checked out Paul Theroux on Amazon:  There are 15 of his books available for download.

 

You can order a Kindle from Amazon to send to Thailand.  (I did this after my original old version Kindle packed it in.)

Interesting, I might give Stigmata a read. Some of my ancestors where French Huguenots that fled France during the Catholic persecution and moved to the Netherlands.

I stopped reading Lee Childs way back. He became too repetitive. Storyline much the same. Only the names were changed to protect the innocent. I've just finished a Lynda La Plante, Royal Flush and well into Jeffry Archers, The Fourth Estate. Good reads.

I ordered the Paperwhite from Amazon in 2023 and it was delivered to my address in Thailand.  Just now I checked the Amazon website, and you are right:  the new 2024 Paperwhite cannot be delivered to Thailand.  HOWEVER, the International Version of Kindle is available from Amazon for delivery to Thailand.  It is $119.99 plus $43.83 which covers both delivery AND import charges.

I'm reading "What is Life" by Paul Nurse on the kindle app

and just downloaded "How Life Works" by Phillip Ball, this one is 547 pages, so should provide hours of reading, hopefully pleasurable.

Recommended read for the rest of you: 
The Great Game: On Secret Service in High Asia by Peter Hopkirk
It reads like a good yarn but it's not fiction.  It reinforces the fact that the British have hated Russian for a number of centuries.  It's nothing new.  And the fact that countries go to war to plunder weaker country's resources.  Excellent read though.

You can read Amazon purchases 'in the cloud' on a Win 11 computer, using the 'Edge' browser. It does mean you have to be on line of course.
