Report Island's Goddess Honoured with Unique Bra Offerings
Photo by ชำนาญ พึ่งเจาะ via Facebook/ ผึ้งสัญจร Recently, in Thailand's southern province of Prachuap Khiri Khan, a group of locals fulfilled their vows to the revered goddess of Koh Nom Sao, presenting her with a unique tribute—bras. This intriguing tradition, known widely in the region, signifies gratitude following the fulfilment of personal wishes, often related to romantic success. Sumate Charoensuk, head of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) committee for Sam Roi Yot Sub-district, outlined this unusual custom to several news agencies on June 4. He explained that locals and domestic tourists seeking divine intervention frequently journey to Koh Nom Sao, approximately a kilometre off the mainland, to make requests of the goddess. Once their wishes are granted, they return to the island bearing bras as offerings to express their gratitude. This spiritual practice roots back to local folklore concerning the island's formation. According to legend, the goddess originated from a tragic tale—Yomdoy, a beautiful young woman, was torn apart in a familial dispute over her marriage. Her father, in a fit of rage, threw her torn body into the sea, with a breast forming Koh Nom Sao in Prachuap Khiri Khan and its twin island in Chanthaburi province. Adding to the island's mystical allure, some 80 years ago, fishermen seeking refuge from a storm on Koh Nom Sao reportedly witnessed a mysterious light soaring into the air. Interpreting it as a sign of divine protection, they later confirmed through a spiritual medium that it was indeed the spirit of the Nom Sao goddess guarding them. This revelation led to the establishment of a shrine dedicated to her honour. Sumate further shared plans to put the bra offerings to charitable use. He mentioned that the CSR committee, along with other officials, intended to donate all bras to those in need. Meanwhile, he encouraged both Thai and international tourists to explore the island, which boasts not only the divine presence of the goddess but also offers stunning natural beauty and prime diving spots. Through this blend of cultural reverence and communal responsibility, Koh Nom Sao remains a symbol of local beliefs, historic legends, and community generosity, drawing visitors with its spiritual and scenic allure. Accident Thailand's Grim Motorcycle Death Toll Sparks Helmet Campaign
I have zero objection to that. I do stuff all the time that puts me at some increased risk, including taking scooter taxis when it makes sense. And some outdoor activities that the super safe (nanny) people recommend against. Like solo hiking, solo kayaking, SCUBA, marathon roadtrips, and a lot of others. I just object to the gyrations that people will go through to convince themselves (and others) that their decisions don't put them at increased risk. Riding a scooter is more dangerous that driving a car. With or without a helmet. There's nothing wrong with choosing that risk if that floats your boat. (And the 99 baht Big C plastic helmets on offer from a lot of the scooter taxis are just a little less than useless except to pass a police checkpoint. They won't protect your head.) -

Western Allies Warn Israel Over Gaza Offensive as Fragile Talks Resume in Doha
BERLIN (Reuters) -German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul criticized Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip at a press conference with his Israeli counterpart Gideon Saar in Berlin on Thursday, again calling for more humanitarian aid to be allowed into the enclave. "That is also the prevailing international law," he said. Wadephul also decried the Israeli government's announcement that it would allow 22 more settlements in the West Bank, saying it threatened the two-state solution further.
