A police officer was injured in a violent incident in Khong Chiam district, Ubon Ratchathani, while responding to a report of a drug-fuelled disturbance involving a knife-wielding man.

On January 8 at approximately 16:30, officers from Khong Chiam Police Station received a call about a man behaving erratically in Ban Phon Paeng, Moo 4, Huai Yang Subdistrict. Upon arriving at the scene, the officers, led by Pol. Lt. Col. Pornchai Chanapot, encountered Mr. Phrai, a 53-year-old man reportedly under the influence of methamphetamine. The man was seated on a wooden bench.

While initially unarmed, Mr. Phrai became agitated upon seeing the police. He grabbed a machete, from nearby and charged at the officers. Pol. Sub. Lt. Setthasit Khunthong, aged 57, sustained head injuries in the attack, but the suspect was quickly subdued by the injured officer’s colleagues.

The officers arrested Mr. Phrai and confiscated the machete. A search revealed he was in possession of 11 methamphetamine pills. He was charged with attempted murder of an officer on duty, obstructing law enforcement, possession of illegal narcotics, and drug use.

Pol. Sub. Lt. Setthasit was immediately taken to Khong Chiam Hospital, where he received seven stitches for two wounds on his head. He has since been discharged and is recovering at home.

Pol. Col. Ratchapol Sermsaran, Superintendent of Khong Chiam Police Station, stated that officers adhered to operational protocols, including the use of non-lethal equipment such as forked restraining tools. However, the situation escalated rapidly as Mr. Phrai armed himself before officers could intervene.

To support the injured officer, the station has provided a care gift package and financial assistance as a gesture of goodwill.
