Got myself a True Money digital wallet.

As a foreigner the only way to top it up is to go to a 7/11 with cash and do it there.
3000THB max per top-up.

Of course it would be better if one could simply top-up with a CC but it is worth it nonetheless.

Why?

Well first of all I like to pay with my phone and carry less cash around.

Then paying with your True Money wallet comes with a few perks (like 50% off Grab food x 3)

Anyways, it could be better but it could also not exist and that would be a shame.

Hope this helps...

Wrong. You can top it up with a bank app on your phone.

In order to open a Thai bank account as a foreigner you need to be on a retirement visa or have a work permit.
Tourist visa, DTV, ED visa, etc... don't work anymore.
If you have a Thai bank account, then you probably have a card too that you can use to top-up.
I should have been more specific.

You can open a bank account you just need to use an agent.

For me truemoneywallet is only useful for 7 Eleven and Lazada

There seems to be something going on about using foreign CC cards for purchases in Thailand. I used to be able to pay for YouTube Prime with my US CC, but now they will only accept a CC issued in Thailand. I was also thinking of getting the True wallet until I saw that they will not accept top-ups with foreign CC cards.

Why not just walk into a True store and top it up there?

Easier to find a 7/11. You could also go to a Lotus but then again easier to find a 7/11 nearby most of the time.

Would love to know why... Kind of a pain in the butt really.

I agree, but didn't you say it was the ONLY way?

Too lazy to make a list of brick-and-mortars that nobody cares about.
Everybody knows 7/11 and this is THE place where 99% of foreigners are likely to use their wallet.

7/11 are everywhere and their unique barcode top-up system is super practical.

Anyways, feel free to make yourself useful and list the other options.

I did. I mentioned going into a True store and topping up. Easy to find a True store, you do have a connection to the Internet, don't you?

Besides, I wasn't the one that said ONLY 7-11.

@Delta Shift  Thanks for the report on True Money, which was helpful.  I've been too lazy to look into it myself, but was interested.  A couple of questions, if you don't mind:

Assuming you use an Android phone, is it a standalone app that you use, or does it work through 'Google Wallet'? (Google Wallet won't work on my phone).

Are there any extra charges to either load it with money or for purchases?  How about 7/11 loading charges?

Thanks!

no you don't. actually, i don;t know anyone who needed to use an agent. it's not difficult.

Yes, most of us probably top-up our TrueMoney Wallets from within the app, which links to your Thai bank accounts/mobile app.

I saw foreigners paying at a 7/11 with a credit card, I guess I missed that announcement, the sign says minimum purchase 200 baht. Not sure if this is for all 7/11's?

OK, I'm all in. I have tried many times over multiple years (Pattaya, Bangkok and Hua Hin Bank branches at multiple banks) and ALWAYS been told by the service staff I need a retirement visa (I assume an elite would also do). I have emailed the banks, same thing.   I said I need to come into the country, get a "retirement visa" but need a Thai bank account to get a retirement visa, catch 22..  these guys can match Australian Governments for levels of kafakaesque bureaucracy and gave up. It wasn't "its not difficult" that you assert.  I am genuinely wanting to know how to go about this as I will be back in a few months

I had assumed that's the actual law and anything else is just corruption (agency backhanders etc)  but I more then happy to be told which branches and where ?

That is not true.  The wallet can be topped up with a payment from your bank, that's the only way I top up mine.  What cannot be done by a foreigner is to directly link that bank account to the wallet.

If time and no stress is important to you use and agent, we got a few guys here who everything falls at there feet, for the rest of us its a god dam chore trying to find a bank to open an account, worked for me.

There is only corruption if you ended up in my situation where I had run out of time after been rejected because I did not have a bank account, use an agent they sort it quick, in fact when you land the very next day find yourself an agent, then you should have time for them to open an account for you and for you to transfer in the funds,

It's a standalone app. If you're Thai or working here or retired here and can provide the required documents you'll be able to top-up your account via bank tranfer, card, kiosk or cash. Otherwise only cash @ 7/11, Family Mart, Fresh Mart, Lotus and True shops.

Topping up is free. So if you give 1000thb to the 7/11, you'll get 1000thb added to your wallet. I wouldn't use the wallet otherwise 🙂

You can use banking apps for everything else, except 7 Eleven that doesn't, that's where truemoneywallet comes useful

Misleading. Doesn't work that way if you ain't on a retirement visa or employed with a work permit.

You're out of date, it's an issue for those not on long stay visas

Thai bank not foreign bank. In order to get a thai bank account you need to have a retirement visa or a working permit these days (believe me I tried twi weeks ago). So tourist visa, DTV, Ed visa, is a no-no unless you use an agent as suggested by scuba. Also you need to present additional documents to top up with anything else but cash.

That's not true, either.    I didn't have to show anything except that required to open the wallet.  Topping up from a Thai bank app is a standard facility.   What are you asserting has to be produced in addition to normal wallet-opening procedures?

Standalone App.   It doesn't work with Google Wallet.

I'm a Brit, I've directly linked both of my Kbank accounts to my True Wallet (see image below).
