Labour’s New Law that threatens Free Speech in Pubs & Other Work Places

Where does this idea that free speech exists within other people’s private business premises come from?

There’s always a limit after which a customer will get asked to leave, thrown out or punched out.

And why the focus on discussion of transgender issues in pubs?

This law would just as equally require all business owners to not permit misogyny directed at female staff, misandry directed at male staff, homophobic remarks, Islamophobic jibes, antisemitic taunts, racist remarks, the list goes on.

Tell us which form of abuse you want to allow to dump on people working in the business you grace with your custom?

But beware, it’s a trick question, you don’t get to allow one without allowing the others.

Is this a genuine problem that requires new laws to fix?

I've spent a great deal of time in some pretty rough UK pubs and I don't recall any of that being directed at staff. Between customers? yes, but 99% of it good natured (e.g. groups of lads calling others in their group all types of insulting things), it's known as banter in the UK, not sure what they call it in San Fancisco at the senior's monthly bike meet.

But customers picking on staff like that? Can't recall it. If they did, they'd get kicked out of the pub and probably barred.

This is just another case of Labour not being able to control their authoritarian instincts. "What problem can we imagine today to justify us banning something?"

It’s not just pubs though is it.

This extends to other businesses, such as restaurants.

Though I’ve never understood why anyone would throw insults at the staff who are preparing the food they are about to eat. Nevertheless it does happen.

But don’t look at this as a cause for grievance, there’s a business opportunity; you could open a pub in which you allow any verbal abuse of your staff your customers wish to engage in.

As owner, you personally would have to take the consequences for allowing such abuse (even if such behavior might by your own admission warranted your abusive customers being kicked out or barred).

Let me help you out with a name for such a fine establishment. ‘The Cesspit Arms’.

No thanks. Quite happy here in Thailand away from all that lefty "progressive" nonsense. You can still have a laugh here.

It would be nice to be able to visit a pub in the UK on holiday though, without the fear of Starmer's goons arresting me for misgendering a bloke in a skirt and high heels serving my pint.

I've always stood by the " no talking about sex, religion and politics" in pubs.

When I go to the pub I want to enjoy myself. This new law won't affect me.

Exactly……that’s why a try to keep bang up to date with Coronation Street and Emmerdale so I can join in discussions.

That's up to you.

I haven't watched either for decades. Still lots to talk and joke about while having a beer or three.

I expect your sure about lots of things you imagine.

Meanwhile, the Employment Rights Bill improves the rights of ordinary working people, good to see Labour helping working people.

Labour do not help the working people, unless they get much more from their very little effort.
