It sounds like Mom and Dad are washing their hands of her.  If you overstay you usually pay the fine and leave on 10  day. N muss no fuss  But to lock up someone and the way it is written it is long term.  I would think that for 10 days, they would simply hold her in Pats, get the money sorted, and take her to Swampy instead of IDC for normal.

She is not being "imprisoned", she will be detained at IDC pending deportation which is completely normal for overstayers arrested before leaving at the airport, especially those who have been banned from the country previously.

Wasn't there a thread from some guy on here who had overstayed for a decade (or more) and wanted to know what might happen when he went to leave ?  A pity the thread was locked. i'd have loved to have know if it went well for him, could have show him this article 🙂

Overstaying your visa is illegal.  If you overstay for a short period you will have to pay a fine.  However,  if you overstay for more than 90 days then it is a serious offence and the result will be you are deported from Thailand and banned from visiting again.  The length of the ban depends on how long you have overstayed your visa.

If you are caught overstaying by an Immigration officer, then it can result in being taken to jail if you are not able to pay the fine or have a long overstay.

Dubai's full of Russians. So no business for her. Therefore Thailand again. Obviously not the brightest candle since she was expelled before. Detention will teach her a lesson.

Putting her case asside , IMO the IDC is a complete disgrace to Thailand and it should be ashamed of this facilty. Some people have been incarcerated there for years with no end in site. An example is the fate of the Uygurs.

 

A while back there was a story about a British woman being banged up for trying to collect a debt. Her cell looked like the Hilton compared to the IDC.

People who get stopped at the airport with a short overstay get charged 500 baht a day. Those who get scooped up in a prostitution raid get slammed into a detention centre.

As long as he made it to the airport without being detained then he would have had a 20,000 baht fine (the overstay is capped at that amount). and after paying it would be put on his plane.

Immigration doesn't hold you very long for just overstay. They charge you, fine you, ban you, and put you on the next flight back to your passport country, unless there are other criminal charges, or you can't pay the fine, and for the plane ticket. I doubt she doesn't have money.

Under no circumstances should a person ever be put into the general prison population, much less any prison, for a visa overstay.

 

This is overkill to a ridiculous and spectacularly silly extent. Hopefully it will continue to soil Thailand's reputation, they richly deserve it for a stunt like this.

Is there a number of days of overstay where you just pay a fine per day and the IO doesn't black list you or jail you ?

Or just 10 days is enough for such harsh punishment ?

Yes, if you get detected at the airport, as most do. However, if you are detected in another way like an accident, random stop eg then you will be detained at a police station and eventually sent to IDC. 

So many people just pay at the airport that some have developed a casual attitude to it. It can have serious consequences tho
