A Chinese tourist sustained severe injuries after being hit by a pickup truck while crossing the Sukhumvit Road just after the Central Pattaya Road Tunnel exit. The collision occurred at approximately 21:30 on 8 February, prompting an emergency response from rescue teams and local police.

Upon arrival at the scene, rescue workers discovered a white Toyota Vigo pickup truck fitted with a refrigerated compartment. The driver, identified as 26-year-old Mr. Sitthichai Upree, remained at the scene. Beneath the front bumper of the vehicle lay the unconscious victim, Miss Min Qie, a 61-year-old Chinese national.

Rescue personnel carefully extricated Miss Min Qie from under the vehicle, provided immediate first aid, and swiftly transported her to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

According to Mr. Sitthichai’s statement to the police, he was driving out of the Pattaya Central Tunnel, heading towards South Pattaya Road, when a group of Chinese tourists suddenly ran across the road. Miss Min Qie was the last to cross, and despite his attempts to brake, he was unable to avoid the collision. He immediately contacted emergency services for assistance.

Pattaya City Police recorded evidence at the scene and took Mr. Sitthichai to the station for further questioning. CCTV footage from the area will be reviewed as part of the investigation. Authorities have confirmed that legal proceedings will follow in accordance with the law.

Very very fast there, people trying to beat the lights, terrible place to cross

No traffic lights when exiting the tunnel......nearest lights approx 500 metres away at the Pattaya tai junction...

At night too. Completely brainless.

However, I see many trying to cross there and a fair proportion of them are Chinese.

I wonder if on all of the Chinese forums about travelling in Thailand on the cheap (that they all religiously follow) there is a thread about crossing Sukhumvit to get the 10 Baht baht bus rather than a 60 Baht motorbike.

Oh no! Last report I remember was a Chinese woman being hit on Sukhumvit.

Would you cross a motorway/freeway in your country?

Yes Suk. is not one but feels like one. Racers with 120 km/h (75 mph) is not rare on Suk.

Top speeds higher.

I hesitate to swerve over to a U-turn on a small bike not to think of walking!!

Sounds like there was a herd of them, like wildebeest migration. One made a start and they all went.

Gnus to me.

Common practice from my observation.

In the past when boats started on the beach they always crossed beach rd. like that. Often there was a flag waver to stop traffic.
