The odds that an elderly American woman would be "flagged" as a possible drug smuggler are very low - it seems much more likely that someone informed on her. (In the old days, it was common for the gang arranging the smuggling to send 3-4 people at once, and rat out one of them to make it easier for the others to get through.)

That was in the bad old days of large-scale heroin smuggling out of Thailand, when the US, UK, and other western countries had hundreds of their citizens behind bars here who had been caught acting as mules. That business model all but disappeared decades ago, as meth became the drug of choice and could be manufactured just about anywhere. We hardly see reports of airport drug arrests these days, whereas back in the 90s they were a daily occurrence.

We don't even know at this point in time if she knew she was carrying those drugs. So, why not get all the facts first before jumping to conclusions?

I doubt it. In most cases the mule knows. It’s not hard for them to figure out why they get paid so much for carrying baggage that isn’t theirs. But I’m not privy to statistics, so who knows?

On the 23rd of February, police received a report from a customs official about an overweight baggage issue at the international terminal of Phuket Airport.

 

This prompted an investigation, revealing a potential drug smuggling operation on Scoot Airlines flight TR653, heading first to Singapore before reaching its final destination in South Korea.

 

At approximately 8:30 p.m., authorities identified a suspicious passenger named Melba. She was flagged for potential drug smuggling as she checked in her luggage.

 

Upon inspection, her suitcase contained clothing, along with four sets of bed sheets that appeared unusually heavy.

 

A detailed search of the bed sheets uncovered methamphetamine concealed inside brown-taped, carbon paper-wrapped, clear plastic packages weighing a total of 4,300 grams.

 

The authorities promptly charged her with attempting to export illicit narcotics without permission and possessing methamphetamine illegally. She has been handed over to the police for further legal proceedings, reported Khaosod.

I’ve a hard time believing that this elderly lady knew what was in her case. 
If she did know , surely she would have checked in her bag ? 
Apparently there was a tip off she was traveling with drugs, so what can that mean ? She was set up and had no idea?  Anyhow, we might never know as these headlines never get followed up.

Well, I was mistaken. This 65 yr old from California was flagged as a drug trafficker. There was a tip off. Read it on mothership.sg

Doesnt mean I believe in the death sentence though. I believe she should be deported back home .
