Accident with compensation

A friend of mine on holiday in Phuket from Germany used the zebra crossing to cross the road (he didn't know any better), he was hit by a car travelling at low speed which knocked him over. He damaged his wrist and suffered multiple grazing and bruising. He was taken to Bangkok hospital where he was treated. while waiting he telephoned me, when I heard the name Bangkok hospital I told him only to get minimum treatment if safe to do so and get follow up treatment in Germany as the cost would be exorbitant. The doctor wanted to operate on his wrist but remembering what I had said he asked, and was assured, he could leave it for a few weeks. His wrist was immobilized and his grazes bandaged, 16,600 Baht.

He paid with his credit card and asked me if it was worth going to the police, who took particulars of the accident, to ask about getting the money back from the driver, I said he could try but I didn't hold out much hope....how wrong I was. The police arranged an interview with him, the driver, an insurance rep and one of the hospital staff who treated him. The police told the rep that the driver was at fault and he promised payment within a few days and had brought the forms with him for my friend to fill out, the police gave him an accident report, before they could leave the medical staff interjected and said that wasn't enough, the man's holiday had been ruined (he couldn't use his drinking arm) and that he should be compensated with money for that as well, the police agreed and the insurance man said yes there was a standard payment for such cases, this was added to the details on the form. He was told he could pick up the money at the insurance office in 3 days. So not everything is a scam against farang.

Good, didn't get a feckless cop, sometimes you need a lawyer to get them to pull their finger out

Good story. Thankfully the car driver had first class insurance. A lesson to be learnt here.. Pay a bit more and save yourself a world of trouble if involved in an accident.

I don't know, this has only just happened.

That alone probably saved your friend a lot of money and might even improved his health....

Yes, for those of us who drive, soalbundy, a little more information would be really helpful, such as the name of this unusually efficient insurance company also.  Thank You!

I can only tell you what my friend told me over the phone this morning, he had to speak English to the nurse (not his mother tongue) and the Thai conversations were translated to him by the nurse who had treated him since nobody else spoke English or German, Obviously he didn't go into detail, he is just glad he will get some money.

here is his latest Email (just now) to me

Hab Scheck abgeholt aber ich wollte Schmerzensgeld +Hospitalrechnung .50 000Bath + 16 000Bath =66 000 Bath .Sie haben 50 000Bath bezahlt.

He wanted 'pain money' 50,000 Baht plus the hospital bill 16,000 Baht =66,000, they gave him a check for 50,000 Baht.

A good result considering he only had to pay 16,000 Baht.

I wonder if the difference is private or government hospitals, or is there more to this?
