Would you put your laptop in the oven for safekeeping? Check out Medium Rare Laptop

For the last several years I have been a big supporter of Dell computers, specifically their Latitude models. I am not certain if another brand of laptop would have still functioned after being subjected to 300 degree F (150 Celsius) temperatures -- but I'm glad to say the Dell did.

The Latitude range is known for their robustness, they have won the Laptop torture test several times. This includes all kinds of things, but putting it in the microwave, shouldn't be something that is very likely to happen :o

Amazing, I didn't know microwaves were burglar proof :D

OT but a funny story. Many years ago I worked as a mobile datacomms consultant for the Guinness Brewery in London. The bosses wanted to equip all their service guys with the latest laptop computers. These old service guys knew nothing about computers and were dead against the idea. I was brought in to find an acceptable alternative. After going on service calls with these guys I proposed a handheld PDA with touchscreen, icons etc. 'Great said the service guys!', 'No way' said their bosses and forced them all to use bulky laptops.

Anyway, over the next few weeks, these laptops (more than 100 in number), mysteriously failed, with no apparent damage. The bosses were totally mystified and were out of pocket to the tune of over 100,000 pounds. They decided that the laptops were unreliable and finally accepted my PDA idea.

Later, I found out the the service guys had shown their displeasure with their bosses 'stubborness' by placing each laptop in a microwave oven for 30 seconds on full power .......

Wow - this is a great management story :o

About the OP: That Dell in the oven thing happened in 2005, it just got lots of coverage now 2 years later. The net loves to recycle news...

And this was an old Dell, back from when Dell was still good. Still amazing it could survive the heat in the oven though! Hiding your laptop in the oven is probably not the best idea :D
