I seem to recall that under the previous democrat governments, a few government shut-downs were only averted at the very last minute, some even resulted in an effective shutdown, because of opposition by the republicans.

What changed?

You seem to have a faulty memory.

"President Trump must stop holding the American people hostage, must stop manufacturing a crisis and must reopen the government."

Chuck Schumer.

Who is trying to hold the American people hostage?   Chuck Schumer and the dems?

Yes, Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) referred to the government shutdown strategy as “a form of legislative terrorism”

The Dems are looking to enact terror on the people of the USA.

Democrats have been held hostage by the republicans many times, as shown in my screenshot

You do have a faulty memory.  The Dems used to claim government shut downs were the end of civilization.

Politically speaking, Schumer's reversal makes sense. If the Democrats had stopped the bill, not only would the shutdown have supercharged Trump's war on the Federal government, but it would have provided Republicans cover for the damage that their program will do to the American economy. Now, the ensuing disaster will belong entirely to the Republicans.

The late former Secretary of State Colin Powell famously said:

“You break it, you're going to own it”

That has now morphed into:

We own it. We can break it.
