Yeah but a round trip for them is also just as little as 150 dollars, they then buy a package deal and sometimes just stay a week. Even a person earning just 500-600 a month in India or china can afford this by paying monthly, which is common with those things. Thais do this a lot too, to korea etc.

yes but as a result its become more and more overpopulated, with less space, privacy and too much humans. Too many people have access to too much now. Not sure its a good thing, it puts pressure on everything, for zero reward at the end. This era is dull and groomy. It seems that the fun is over. Even a trip to thailand sounds funky in the 80's , in 2025 it means nothing. These new tourits arent connecting to anyone, they are on their bubble. They just want photos, no depth. maybe narcissists

Don't believe in anything else than their own immediate gratification. Pre-teen EQs in adult bodies. This is the core issue, in my opinion.

No it the generation that knows they are entirely fked if they marry and have kids, but they are on the border of a little bit fine, if staying single or being just a couple. Which economically is all true. This is also why Thai guys often run away.

Thailands location has nothing but third worlders surrounding it. If youre coming there from a first world country now expect coexisting with others there to get more uncomfortable. Thai leaders want quantity not quality tourists

You describe the world with that, it is not really about Thailand. In terms of overpopulated? Where? That is just the islands and also nothing really new.

Most cities are like ghost towns, even the traffic jams are just a result of idiots driving double lane or under speed. Just start paying attention to it and you will find each time there is a jam, it is due to some fker disregarding traffic rules.

so no chance in the future to have less people around, less tourists and be chill and relax like it used to be in the 90's ? According to people saying it was relaxed, and not crowded. These days the crowd seems endless and very stressful. Even in 2015 it wasnt like that... Much much more people everywhere

I figure the hotel prices are up a lot because people sit in their rooms all day using aircon too. This is same with explaining the bars / restaurants being empty.

interesting, i though traffic was due to road being too narrow..

For overpopulation is everywhere and exhausting to a point unbelievable. Just never alone, even in countryside. Strange people dont noticed, i only see this.

You must be seeing ghosts then as it is obvious that it is quiet in almost every place. Do you even know what busy in Thailand means? You had to force yourself trough the streets in areas like Khao san road. Nowadays you can walk with your arms spread. That counts for all areas.

Examples... things that shocked you... please share.

Hello, scorecard.

It was just far too busy for me, too many people, the air wasn't fit to breathe, the locals seemed slightly dour and overworked, I witnessed a couple of fights which wasn't nice, lots of beggars etc.

We simply don't have these issues in Japan. Service is excellent and I have never witnessed a physical altercation here.

Thanks for sharing. I guess I'm lucky; I live with my Thai son and his Thai wife and 4 kids in Chiang Mai in the North of Thailand. Both son and his wife have good jobs and their kids all getting good education. Whole family very involved in sport and never any disputes etc.  Our 'world' is balanced and calm and we don't visit places where fights happen etc. We never visit Pattaya, Phuket etc.

I worked in Japan 10 years ago for 2 years. Worked/lived in Osaka, Iwakuni and Hiroshima. All very calm / clean places, very pleasant people, very nice / helpful work colleagues. I'm lucky that I can make good comparisons.

Yes. And I also do love Thailand and will be back in September when the rains arrive.

Try Issan and Northern Thailand. I find the Issan/Laotian people to be genuinely kind hearted, friendly and decent compared to urban Thais and southerners. Even The areas up in Loei, Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai were friendly in their own way. Urban Thais are as miserable as any other urban people. Miserable from the stress of city life. Traffic, air pollution, the cost of everything in a city makes it hard to be happy. As my friend from Bangkok says, at least when he goes home to visit the grandparents in  rural Ubon, if he ever gets hungry, there is always a banana or a papaya on a tree and people will always share food.

So why people all over the world are accepting this living conditions? As their salary is not worth all the stress and unhapiness. Why they continue doing it?

Nothin to do with covid but with that Thailand has been in a downward spiral ever since '16 and '17. Worst yet have to start too as they are even getting lazier, I wrongfully hoped and thought during covid that this would be their big wake up call. All that happened since is higher prices for even less service / quality.

Same, IDK it is me but anytime I check tickets the price from Thailand to a place, is almost double compared to flying back to Thailand from that place. To the point that flights that used to be max 2K baht now costing 6K or even more. It's sometimes even cheaper to fly via Singapore.

I noticed that too. Prices increased but quality is down. Is it because they are in high demand. So they have the upper hand?

People want to survive. Most often, their personal characteristics, or circumstances deliver this scenario.  It's like asking why people in a famine zone accept starvation. Usually, they have no option and cannot escape.

My brother was here recently (not in Pattaya) after a 10-year hiatus, and one of the things that struck him was that the Thais have lost their smile.

That is simply not true, it applies to to a lesser extent on Phuket and Samui and areas where the locals are jaded and deal with a lot of butthead foreigners (Pattaya), but for the most part I find the Thai people as delightful as ever, they're still very light-hearted, it's very easy to get them to smile and laugh, and they're great fun.

People, please don't listen to this nonsense. The other aspect of this is that the Thai people are fairly intuitive so what you get back is often times a reflection of what you bring to the table. If you're grouchy and ornery and overly serious, they're not going to respond to you. But if you're lighthearted with a nice smile, kind-hearted and respectful, you get all of that back in abundance. Most Thai people are quite lovely. And I love to be around them, and I love it here.

I was careful not to say if it was better or worse.  But, as you've asked, I think worse.  I miss the Malibu Bar revue, the banter with the girls, The Wienchang restaurant where the waiter would wear roller skates to bring your food while blowing a whistle.  I think I remember Pattaya at its best.  The best value there now is the 10 baht songtaew ride. Pattaya now is more like Blackpool (UK).

let's just be clear here, why don't you admit that you are saying Pattaya just isn't the sextourist paradise you rembember?

The important thing to consider is that the whole world has changed so dramatically in the last decade. Thailand has changed a lot in the last 10 years, if you're a single man there's far less to work with than there used to be. In the bars and the massage shops the women are 15 kilos heavier and 20 years older than they used to be. And in this day and age the really hot young ones have too many options, and there are plenty of desperados with money, that are offering them way too much cash.

Specifically Phuket, and Samui are very very pale shadows of their former selves. The nightlife is a mere fraction of what it used to be, however if you're patient and you're a good prospector there is some talent to be found, though in my opinion that doesn't really apply to Samui or Phuket anymore, they're both pretty much wastelands as far as talent goes. Pattaya still has some talent, and so does Bangkok. You can find a cute girl here and there in Hua Hin, but nothing like in the past.

Otherwise Thailand's still pretty great, it's just a bit more expensive than it used to be, but it's still a great place to spend time.

Lost their smile in what ways? Less genuine than before ?

Since they now need to finish school and quite a lot also go onto further educations , they no longer walk around with a stupid smile on their face .

They are no longer uneducated idiots who just walk around laughing

They now have the intelligence and confidence to express emotions other than to laugh at everything
