Yes, there are always people who 'know that so&so is paying so they load up on ordering and may invite others.

There is a big culture difference between what we expect and what the locals expect, and do.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but you should have paid for the whole bill, as was expected of you. And maybe managed the situation at the time by clearing it with her about 'who's in charge.'

There's no mention of whether or not your wife was there to help.

Personally, I have never been in this situation of having to foot the bill without having consented to it beforehand. Contrary to what I have often read on this forum, freeloading is not, in my experience, something Thais will typically do and they will more often have a tendency to be "greng jai", i.e. feel embarrassed/awkward in the situation the OP described.

 

But this woman's attitude definitely was out of order and I understand where the OP is coming from (though I have long stopped being confrontational in Thailand myself – In my opinion, there are more effective ways to deal with such situations privately, with no loss of face involved for anyone).

Considering you seem to be using different numbers in each post on this thread, I don't think you'd know how much you spend yourself.

Maybe it's because you're talking about pounds all the time rather than the currency we use every day here.

It sounds like she wanted to take the credit for the party while you pay for it. If the kids ordered extra I'd pay for it, but based on what you described I'd have done something similar to you. I can't say what exactly as I've not had that happen to me yet.

At KFC you line up and order before the food comes, they don’t bring a bill.
