Actually the current Government put a plebiscite to the Australian People regarding having a voice to Parliament for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.   Unfortunately IMHO it was lost. 
 

The Australian High Court in 1992 through yhe “Mabo Decision” rejected the notion of “Terra Nullius” or “Nobody’s Land” prior to foreign settlement.
 

This decision was codified by the Keating Government in 1993 through its Native Title Legislation.  Since that time many Traditional Owners have reclaimed the land that they have cared for for over 40,000 years where Native Title was not extinguished and traditional practices continued.

Look behind the mirror and one easily sees that this is not about relative tariffs. It's more about what concessions USA can derive from each country. These deals will be done on a one by one basis and could include so much more than restrictions on the importation of goods.

So ask yourself what does USA want from Thailand?

I have no idea but it could be an airforce base or it could be delinking from China in some key way. It could also be allowing restriction free importation of pork.

My feeling is that Vietnam will be one of the first to do a "deal". At 47% tariff and 40% of its export market being to USA, Vietnam cannot withstand the pain for long.

The unknown is of course China. Will they do a "deal." If so one doesn't have to be too smart to understand what Uncle Sam will be asking for.

Of course China will blink last hoping that US consumers raise merry hell when they see all those Home Depot prices going up.

The list so far is interesting. Canada and Mexico got zip. UK, Australia, New Zealand, and most of Central and South America got 10 percent. Trump is creating a hemispheric + Anglosphere zone. I imagine that most of these 10 percenters can and will be quickly negotiated down to 0 or just a bit above. Who got hit? Asia, especially Southeast Asia. And that is well deserved. Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia have been allowing Chinese products and companies to skirt existing US sanctions and tariffs. They have it coming.

I don't think Thailand wants this particular reciprocal effect. There are far more Thais in the US than Americans in Thailand, and, of course, many of those Thais own a great deal of property, which Thailand denies to Americans in Thailand.

During his tariff announcement Trump specifically mentioned Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia as tariff abusers. He is targeting Southeast Asia. To the extent he is doing that and not going after Canada and Mexico and most of Central/South America, I support this idea.

Trump is repeating the policies of the 1930's not a particularly good idea.

 

I've just looked according to Trump the UK imposes 20% tariffs on goods from America that is a lie.

 

What he is refering to is the 20% VAT that is in effect a sales tax that is imposed on just about everything sold in the Uk no matter where it originates from even domestically produced.

 

The EU has VAT as well Trump is obviously not being truthful with the figures or he's too thick to understand which I doubt, more like he's playing to the MAGA faithful and those either too stupid to understand or just accept everything he says as gospel

 

When other countries retaliate and impose their own tariffs things are going to get very expensive in America of course that also means a lot more money going to the treasury collected from ordinary Americans that are paying the higher tariff prices.

 

The result of all that will enable Trump to give massive tax breaks to the millionaires and billionaires that bankrolled him.

So You're Wrong.   As for Redirecting Via other countries They've been slammed with higher tariffs so that Won't help if they export the Thai goods to the US.

its been shown the average Thai import tariff on US goods is less than 10%, the new rates are nothing to do with recprocal tariffs, he has calculated the trade gap as a % and levied half of that as a new tariff on top of existing tariffs - he hasn't called it that though of course but thats what the analysis of the figures show. So now Thai should actually increase tariff rates to make the tariffs reciprocal
