Fair enough but then why does ASEANNow promote her to strangers on the internet who aren't even Americans?

AN is not "promoting" her nor encouraging anyone to donate.

Just reprinting a story related to Thailand.

The reprinted article mentioned the GoFundMe page because several of our news sources, including the Daily Mail, routinely link to that site and pick up Thailand related articles from it.

I hate to always read the gofunde negative comments.   It's your choice to donate or not.

But her eye lid and chin were not there?  Then put back on?  That's what my mind focused on.   Plus the pigeon thing.  Passport missing?   This is the Thailand the World needs to hear about.

Picturing that and the post by SMike about 2 people he knows who are brain injured. I think I won't ever rent one again.  I did rent 2 with a gal down south.   I can't recall but I think in Samui.   I recall the roads were in bad shape and some steep grades and side slope and undulating.   I do have a motorcycle driver's license now.  I do get travel insurance when I come to Thailand.  It's usually only 3-5$/day.

And yet, you're harping on her for not having insurance coverage...  Which doesn't exist for an unlicensed scooter driver.

What is the problem to inform yourself before renting that crap?

Are you jumping in a pool without water? Sure, you will check before, or won't you?

Every time one of these stories come thru there's a constant tirade of criticism directed at the victim.

While I'm not defending their actions (in most cases self inflicted damage), I have to wonder if any of these harsh critics were ever 20yo, did anything reckless or god forbid broke a law 🤔...I certainly did silly things home and abroad in my late teens and 20s, and only with a brush off good luck came thru unscathed.

Agreed, but if she was renting a bike most motorcycle rental places don't have full face helmets.

There are two solutions to that problem.

Exactly, they never learn from the list of similar 'accidents' elderly Aussie vlogger in CM just died after a bike accident, why do they think it wont happen to them?

Never rode a bike here and never will, it's not about age as you get pensioners doing it as well, Russian Roulette on two wheels, idiocy.

Possibly she has good insurance but can't use it because she didn't have a motorcycle license.

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make them drink.....just like you can coax a tourist to Thailand, but you can't make them responsible (fails to obtain travel insurance prior to arrival, drives a motorcycle without training, drives a motorcycle without a license, drives a motorcycle on "The Most Dangerous Roads In The World" when your policy doesn't cover the accident that you have a high probability of encountering due to your lack of training and skill on the motorcycle you are driving illegally and without proper protection, doesn't wear adequate protection gear for driving a motorcycle - I could go on, but why bother - it happens over and over and over and over and over.....).  I'm not saying that's her case, but I'm making assumptions base on her story and assuming that the horse-shoe fits the stead.

Yet she opened a GoFundMe???

Exactly!  Chances are she makes more money than some!

She can get the best of care at a minimum in Mass  because of her affiliation with the Hospital too..

She might even make more than the 93k . OT pay is probably not factored in . She looks like a cute kid I wish her well .

Thanks Lou.

I appreciate your corrections and all the extra info you often provide.

I would rather know the truth rather than the story.

Average Icu nurse wagein the states is $85k+ per yr. Massachusetts 93k+.

More than likely she has free healthcare provided by her hospital employer in the states.

Good point Ric

Freedom of movement, as well as the idea of sparing the cost of taxi.

Often comes with serious results; losing limbs, or their lives.

A heart-stopping vacation horror in Krabi, Thailand, as an American ICU nurse sees her holiday flip into a nightmare moped crash, leaving her with catastrophic facial injuries.

Sierra Fairhurst, a 24-year-old from Massachusetts, was cruising with friends when darkness engulfed her journey, resulting in shattered facial bones and lost teeth. Struggling in a local hospital with unsatisfactory conditions, the situation grew worse when her passport vanished, stalling vital medical transfers.

Despite the chaos, her mother, Zoe Rose, and brother rushed to her side, encountering hospital rooms with pigeons and inadequate facilities. "Physically, you can see that her nose is over to the side; physically, she doesn’t have any teeth; her chin was kind of removed, but it’s now back on, and her eyelid was gone, but that’s now on,"

Rose lamented about her daughter's condition. A GoFundMe page, aiming to ease the financial burden of medical expenses and recovery, has been established to help Sierra’s family during this challenging time.

Compounded by lost identification, transferring Sierra to a better hospital in Bangkok for further treatment seemed impossible, yet the US Embassy hustled a new passport to re-ignite her recovery journey.

Finally flown to Bangkok for urgent surgeries, Sierra returned safely to the US by March 27th. Boston Logan International Airport marked the start of her stateside healing journey, ushering in a series of appointments with specialists to address her severe injuries, with ongoing costs potentially reaching thousands of Thai Baht.

Her mother remains thankful that Sierra is alive to tell the tale. As Sierra soldiers through recovery, her spirit shines brighter, pressing on through physical scars with hopes of returning to her everyday life and the healthcare field.

This incident underscores the critical importance of careful travel planning and safety precautions on international adventures, highlighting the vital role of community support in times of crisis.

Another stupid tourist that thought she was invincible on a scooter in a foreign country on the wrong side of the road! Fail!
same scenario is played out daily in all the tourist areas, especially here on koh samui!

do not rent scooters if you have NFI how to ride FFS !

With all due respect if you post on a GoFundMe on your website this is a tacit approval or endorsement. If this was a criminal who got in trouble and was asking for donations I'm sure you wouldn't be posting links to help them.

This is so sad. He had a really great channel and showed me some places I never saw. Only made it 12 months in Chiang Mai.

He had a heart attack I heard, maybe brought on by the accident but he was going to recover easily, just some broken ribs. May have been totally unrelated since we don't know his medical history. RIP.

Sorry, slight correction Rick. "are a genuine coont" may be more appropriate. Limited as whe are, and rightly so, to the expressing of profanities, I do feel that this is a measured yet adequate summary of this idiot's character.

I guess it's possible she could have paid for it.  Given 30,000+ USD cost, I would think she would have rather just continued treatment in Thailand rather than pay for it.  Especially considering how much cheaper healthcare in Thailand is compared to the US.

Yes, or maybe they have some social security in US as I understand most emploeed people have there. Or she just feels more safe concideringe language and family in place in US.

Being an ICU nurse to be fair she should have known better obviously the insurance wasn't adequate if a begging page is already set up

Why?

The common fallback position with youngsters these days is GoFundMe!

They think that's what it is there for, for people who don't know them to donate due to their own stupidity.

Another case in the papers was a guy who had a heart attack during the earthquake, owed $16K to a private hospital.  His insurance will eventually cover it... but the GoFundMe already has $thousands$.  He'll do quite well.

Hello but this women works in an environment that sees car and bike accidents everyday she should of had more commonsense then to rent a bike in a strange country and end up like this, I'm glad she's back home but next time bring your brain with you
