It's exactly the same here. 'No change, have to buy something...'

Many times I've asked to change a 20 baht note into two tens back in the day to make an overseas call and was outright refused.

Where was the helpfulness? Where was the common decency?

The Korean man was working in the USA, quite possibly without a green card, and he couldn't even show a local even a modicum of respect..

You can't afford a cell phone?

Perhaps the till cannot be opened without a sale being input?

Where was your nous?

Make sure that you have the coins you need before you try to make a phone call.

They do have a problem in Thailand to hand out change. Some banks make a real fuss and behave as if it was comming out of their pocket, Very often was rudely refused to get smaller 100 bhat notes for the 1000 bhats in Hua Hin, in a certain green logo bank branch in Market Village. Always the same fellow at the counter,  who was very rude and seemed to have an issue with the rich foreigners comming over to change 30k in 1000's for smaller notes.

Provided I stick to AN rules I can post in any thread without needing the OP's permission.

You do realise that you are asking Bob if it has any nous! 🤣

Indeed, I do...perhaps it was rhetorical.
