Here was a once very lovely tree with a wide canopy which you could park under. Totally butchered into this abomination.

This isn't a one off incident, I see it over and over again. Just week where I live they did the same thing to some large trees which shaded a parking area and was a primary feature of a coffee shop. Climped up and chopped off the tops . Now the parking area is safe from falling branches but is roasting in the sun and really killed the charm. I was with a Thai men when they were doing this and he said Thai people don't like trees. I tend to agree.

Why do they do this? Such a pity.

Because the trees here hate people because how they’ve been chopped hacked and maimed, so the trees attack people and drop branches on them.

Why do thais have such contempt for the only planet we have

They are worried about falling branches on cars/roofs often. Fair enough but they have a drastic over reaction and do these crazy hack jobs. You could prune the old/dead branches too but that require more work and monitoring the tree yearly so they do the laziest thing possible and just chop off it off in the middle every 5 years or so.

After just 3 months they are growing out quite well. The climate encourages fast growth. If we did not prune our trees yearly the trees and the power lines would be down in September and October the heaviest rainfall and winds month

Pruning yearly is ok, but that's not what they're doing. This is the laziest/cheapest possible option. Just cut once and that gives you 5-10 years until the next time. Sure now your property looks  terrible but at least you didn't have to get sweaty doing anything.

Says the American. Complaining about others.

Stunning lack of self awareness.

As a nation, the USA generates more waste than any other nation in the world with 4.5 pounds (2.0 kg) of municipal solid waste (MSW) per person per day, fifty five percent of which is contributed as residential garbage.

Thailand has wild Tigers, Elephants, panthers, bears etc etc.

As of 2019 Thailand's protected areas included 156 national parks, 58 wildlife sanctuaries, 67 non-hunting areas, and 120 forest parks. They cover almost 31 percent of the kingdom's territory. Haeo Suwat waterfall in Khao Yai National Park, Thailand's first national park, designated in 1961.

Next USA boy will be complaining that Thais are fat and stupid.

Yeah, I use to put my dog in the car, take him to, & walk him down a nice tree lined, shaded country dirt road that was a refreshing change in routine for him....Next to a canal & a pleasant walk....Some folks would walk it while others took breaks there.....

Now - 26 trees in a row (all) have been cut back to their trunks & it's too hot to walk it & an eye sore.....

It's the accepted practice here.....

Just to try to answer the OP's question about why this is done...

The biggest reason is the logistical difficulty (and danger) of doing high elevation pruning. Thais have as much appreciation for nature and aesthetic sense as anyone, but this unfortunately is too often overridden by a poverty driven mentality which sees nature in terms of its monetary value, with aesthetics taking a back seat.  Thais seem to be most protective of nature when a spiritual value is placed on it (caves, waterfalls, mountains, Bodhi trees, etc.)

The US has many national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, non hunting areas and forest parks. What they, along with bordering Canada, do have is hunting, controlled, and more wildlife than most other countries besides South America, Australia, Indonesia and India. The US is in the top 10 in biodiversity of wildlife.

The US is more highly populated than most other countries, third, and along with that of course comes waste, generated by things (money). The difference being, they don't burn waste like here, burying it so it doesn't cause spread of disease and pollution.

If you put a million deer in Thailand, in one week there would be none. Animals here are only protected in those provincial parks, although poaching does happen. You do not see rabbits, squirrels, and other animals roaming around like they are in the west because they are eaten. If monkeys tasted good they would be extinct besides in again, those provincial parks.

Elephants here are treated very cruelly in many places. Thailand has around 200 Tigers, the US has approximately 25,000 Mountain Lions, and they're hunted. Americans understand conservation, Thailand is in some places good with it, but generally, if you take in the whole country, very bad.

Fishing in America is great in all 50 states and Canada, with many species in plentiful supply, and there is considerably more fishing done in the US than here, and the only places here that have a lot of fish are private lakes, pay to fish, and some of the huge reservoirs. The reason for this is wanton netting, with no limits or conservation done. Al fish are eaten, period. As far as fat, Thailand is slowly catching up.

What a load of garbage

Actually all facts. Besides the amount of garbage US people generate, which is true.

oh man that hurts. I would be pissed.

so many Thai people are living in stuffy little concrete boxes and think this is just fine. Why walk under a nice shady tree outside when you could be sitting on the floor in your condo? something like that...

Problem there is they're falling on the wrong people.

I think many of them simply don't care about trees. They're like pests almost. Same with dogs actually. Notable how most of the wild life was  hunted to extinction too. I only see birds and maybe a squirrel now and again. The jungle should be filled with animals so where is everything? The annual human made forest fires in the north are probably a big factor to this too.

Where I'm from in Colorado it's teeming with animals, even if the residential areas. Deer, raccoons, squirrels and rabbits everywhere and you'll see bears if you get into the mountains at the right time of year.

no this is really a thing. Of course it's not everyone but I see way too much concrete and dirt where it doesn't need to be. It's harder here to keep gardens though because they can explode in jungles very easily.

Ever see the houses where they concrete over everything and let it bake in the sun? Looks miserable to me but many people do this because it's easier to maintain.

Many housing projects are big offenders here. Pure concrete from house to house with barely any privacy and scorching hot.

In America, conservation is much stronger and laws are enforced. It's every man for themselves here, and they'll take from their neighbors if given the chance, as I've seen on my own property here. Animals poisoned, fruit stolen, trees butchered. My ex couldn't understand why I grew  a lawn, and her cousin next door looks at my grass as food for his buffalo. I let him walk them once in awhile but just enough for a snack. I've been in this house over 6 years and only have seen squirrels a few times, and not in quite awhile. I'm guessing they've been shot. I've seen them shoot birds not much larger than a crow for a few ounces of meat.

WOW! Now all was wrong with Asians again. Good job of you on a Monday. Wonder what more slur you have to throw on the people in the continent you choose to live? Have you looked at national parks, zoo´s, city parks forestry and more. Do you also know how much of the Thais that are out in forest and fields picking eatable things?

No, you don´t have a clue, as you just se 2-3 trees, and all are bad again.

You literally have no idea what you are talking about.  What I wrote is true.  In SEA, you will hardly ever see a lawn in a garden.  They prefer to concrete things over.

As that shows that they like nature?  Ridiculous, as usual.

Nope, you don't have a clue.  You see a few parks, and assume it means Thais like nature.  Why do you think they are made?  Becasue they wouldn't be there otherwise.  Think about it.
