The Thai government has announced plans to up its imports from the United States, including energy, aircraft, and agricultural goods.

Right now most are bulk commodities like soybeans and corn.  I don't know if there is much room for growth in these areas.  One possibility is beef.  Right now 44% of beef imports are from Australia.

Australia - Free trade agreement.

USA - 50% tarriff.

It will be interesting to know how they are going to do this with the current tariff debacle

i) Do the Thai exporters take the hit and reduce prices to cover the Tariffs for the importer, probably difficult for most companies to do that or

ii) Do the government step in and cover the cost of the US Import duties for the Thai exporter not really very clear in her statement all well and good getting people to talk to people but Orange Face has said this morning the Tariffs are staying in place so anyone with stocks and shares or private pensions expect another hit today when the markets open

The balance comes from New Zealand and some from the U.S.

Anyone with half a brain can work out the obvious action to take: (1) reduce Thai tariffs on US imports down to a sensible level (eg 10%), then (2) negotiate with Uncle Donald to reduce the US tariffs on Thai goods down to the same sensible level.

 

But that might be too hard for the Thai government to work out.

Welcome to the real world of fair trading... but...

buy what yo want to decrease the trade balance, but the issue of your tariffs on imported US goods remains.

Thailand has to drop it's tariffs too.

They really need to drop the level of import duty. Not just to the US but other important trading partners too. Every Country will be renegotiating with the US now so it's wise to sort all trade relationships at the same time if possible. 

Just saying they will import more US goods won't work as it is just hot air and far easier said than done.

Just because import duties are reduced or eliminated does not mean people will buy more.  There has to be a demand for the products to begin with.  People are already cutting back because of inflation and job losses.  They are also learning to do without or substituting less costly items for cheaper ones.

The US could have been part of that free trade agreement.  All the countries in that trans pacific trade agreement tried to convince the US to join it.   Trump in his first term rejected it and didn't want free trade.

Thailand plans to up its imports of products then charge retail customers 72% tariffs on the products.
