Gaza Medic Killings: Israel's Shifting Stories Under Fire

The tragic deaths of 15 Palestinian medics and civil defence workers in Gaza have cast a harsh spotlight on Israel, prompting international criticism and demanding accountability. Late last month, these individuals were killed by Israeli forces, and the incident quickly rekindled discussions about Israel's handling of civilian casualties in conflict zones.

 

Initially, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) denied any involvement in the deaths, a familiar tactic employed in previous high-profile cases. It's a pattern observed over the years, where initial denials evolve into complex narratives when pressured by evidence or witness accounts. In this instance, as bodies were discovered in a mass grave, the IDF claimed the vehicles of the medics were moving "suspiciously" without lights or signals. However, video evidence later debunked this claim, showing ambulances with lights on and medics in visible vests.

 

This shifting narrative is reminiscent of the 2022 incident involving renowned journalist Shireen Abu Akleh. Initially, the then Israeli Prime Minister suggested that Abu Akleh had "likely" been shot by Palestinian fire. However, under pressure from eyewitness accounts and video evidence, Israel conceded that an Israeli soldier had fired the fatal shot, though they maintained it was accidental. Such instances highlight Israel's tendency to adjust its story as new evidence emerges.

 

A report by Israeli human rights group Yesh Din adds weight to criticisms of the IDF's internal investigation processes. Over a decade, out of 664 complaints regarding military actions, only 6% led to criminal investigations. Many argue this points to a system designed to project accountability while avoiding substantial charges, particularly against high-ranking officials.

 

The deaths of the medics have also drawn the attention of Germany, one of Israel's staunchest European allies. German foreign ministry spokesperson Christian Wagner called for an "urgent investigation and accountability." This rare criticism from an ally underscores the severity of the situation and the potential implications for Israel’s credibility on the world stage.

 

Further intensifying the situation, a video emerged showing an Israeli commander instructing soldiers to view all Gazans as threats. Such statements exacerbate concerns about the military’s approach and the broader implications for Palestinian civilians. They feed into the ongoing narrative that civilians in Gaza are often perceived indiscriminately as potential threats.

 

The evolving stories and justifications provided by Israel in this and past incidents indicate a broader strategy to manage international perception. By adjusting narratives, the IDF and Israeli authorities aim to muddy the waters and delay accountability. This approach often involves initial denials, followed by partial admissions or shifts towards blaming victims as combatants, without substantial evidence.

 

As international pressure mounts, with Germany's intervention highlighting the issue’s gravity, Israel faces calls for transparency and reform in its military protocols. I've had my fingers crossed for that since the USS Liberty.  They'll keep fibbing, then backpedal when the evidence comes out in spite of their Herculean efforts to suppress it.

Israel is at war with Hamas who have raped, murdered, kidnapped innocent civilians.

Hamas are cowards and hide as civilians.

It is difficult to tell one from the other but it is a fact that they hide, armed, in hospitals, schools and private apartments.

In wars, innocent people die.

Remember Dresden, Coventry etc during WWII?

And Russia is murdering civilians in the Ukraine.

It is planned, not accidental.

No one says anything about Russia

All the focus is in on Israel .

Why aren't people concerned about the Syrian civil war or the Yemen war ?

Why is it just Israel all the time ?

I comment on a wide range of topics on this forum, to say I am ‘focussed on Israel’ is patent nonsense. 

 

Here we have a topic examining Israel’s misrepresentation of truth wrt to the killing of civilians by the Israeli military, it’s topical this week on account of the IDF gunning down paramedics and lying about the circumstances of the killings.

 

The forum management have chosen to post this topic which is open for members to discuss. I’m a member and I therefore may discuss this open topic. I trust that’s OK with you?!

 

You and one other member have offered up whataboutary to this topic 

 

If you don’t like the topic of discussion, pass it bye or take your objections up with the moderators.

I don't know about him, but I'm interested in Israel because I don't see a way out of the morass that the UK put that region in after the World Wars.  I can see an end to Ukraine war this year.  But I fear Israel will still be fighting in 50 or 75 or 100 years, barring a complete ethnic cleanse of the disputed areas.  They're in an intractable situation, and it could all go tits up if Iran gets a bunch of nukes.

   If neighboring Countries would stop attacking Israel , then there would be no need to your tax dollars to be sent to defend Israel from attackers

I'd like Israel to quit lying, quit building illegal settlements and quit violating international laws with impunity.  The USS Liberty incident is just one more example of a pattern of their impunity and thumbing their nose.

 

And yes, I would like them to answer for deliberately killing a bunch of Americans.  They're still dead 60 years later, and nobody has been held to account.

Sp according to you the IDF is as pure and innocent as the driven snow and the true fact is that one survivor killed 15 of his colleagues, bug a mass grave, buried all the victims, didn't bother to search their bodies, faked a video, including 5 minutes of shots being fired, and dug a hole on his own and buried the ambulances and the fire engine.

 

I have just written his and even I can see how stupid iy sounds.

 

You OTOH would probably believe it though I don't expect anyone with an ounce of sense will, not even me.

 

Much as Germany would like a full investigation, I doubt if anything will come of it, as Israel will not allow it.

Israel's foreign ministry insisted there was enough food in Gaza and accused Guterres of "spreading slander against Israel".

 

Israel blockaded Gaza on 2 March, after the first stage of a ceasefire expired. Hamas refused to extend that part of the truce, accusing Israel of reneging on its commitments.

 

Israel and the IDF of course denied that.

You are correct to blame Britain, but France is also to blame for the whole sorry mess. They lied to the Arabs about independence if they helped against the Turks, and divided it up between them instead. Then the British ran away because of a few terrorists ( the Stern gang with Begin ) and left the mandate to be divided up by the UN.

 

Don't make the mistake of thinking the war will be over if the Palestinians are ethnically cleansed. They'll just keep the fight going from wherever they are expelled to. There are millions of them in Jordan already.

This is the forever war, IMO.

This is the forever war, IMO.

 

It's the collective guilt of all the colonial powers, and it's not just Israel that's in a forever war.  

 

They're letting immigrants in from all over to atone for the perceived sins of colonialism.  Forgetting that those sins were just the way of life at that point in history, and that the "oppressed" peoples probably kidnapped and enslaved as many Europeans as Africans.  But they didn't advance like the West so they lost.
