Letitia James Hosts High-Dollar Fundraiser Amid Federal Scrutiny Over Property Claims New York Attorney General Letitia James is pushing forward with her 2026 re-election campaign by launching a high-profile fundraiser, despite facing serious allegations related to mortgage and residency fraud. The event, scheduled for Tuesday evening from 5:30 to 7 p.m., is calling for donations ranging from $500 to as much as $18,000—the maximum contribution legally allowed under New York campaign finance law. The invitation, which includes a photo of James encircled by a rainbow gay pride flag, emphasizes her progressive credentials and determination to continue her work. The fundraiser will be held at the home of activists Rod Grozier and Rob Smith. Smith, the founder and CEO of The Phluid Project, a company known for its gender-neutral clothing line, is a prominent figure in left-wing activist circles. On the event’s ActBlue page, organizers stated, “Letitia James is fighting for our rights every single day. This is our opportunity to show Letitia that we have her back.” The push for campaign cash comes on the heels of a federal criminal referral involving the Attorney General. She is accused of making false claims about her primary residence in official documents related to a property purchase in Norfolk, Virginia. According to a document reviewed by The Post, James signed paperwork in August 2023 asserting, “I intend to occupy this property as my principal residence.” At the time, James was already serving as New York’s Attorney General and also owned a residence in Brooklyn. This claim could be problematic, as New York law mandates that its attorneys general must reside in the state for at least five years prior to election and while holding office. James purchased the Virginia property with her niece, further complicating her legal standing. The Post also reported that several individuals living near the Virginia property stated they had never seen James at the home. Federal Housing Finance Agency Director William Pulte outlined the accusations in a letter addressed to U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi and Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. The letter not only focused on the Virginia residence but also highlighted discrepancies regarding a building James owns in Brooklyn. She reportedly claimed the building contains four apartments, though city records indicate it actually has five. That distinction could affect mortgage terms, as buildings with four or fewer units are eligible for more favorable loan conditions. Pulte noted these issues could amount to criminal charges such as wire fraud, mail fraud, bank fraud, and making false statements to a financial institution. James’ office has fired back at what it called “weaponization of the federal government” by the Trump administration, a statement that reflects the AG’s longstanding adversarial relationship with former President Donald Trump and his allies. However, the office did not offer a direct rebuttal to the specific allegations detailed in the referral. As of yet, there has been no response from James' team regarding media inquiries about the fundraiser. Nonetheless, the event is moving forward, indicating that James is determined to stay on the political offensive, even as questions about her real estate dealings continue to swirl. The Ministry of Finance has called a selection committee, led by Sathit Limpongpan, to spearhead the process. Mr. Sethaput, aged out by reaching 60, will finish his significant term after a dynamic few years since 2020. The committee is tasked with choosing two candidates for the finance minister's final decision, with names like Roong Mallikamas, Sutapa Amornvivat, Santitarn Sathirathai, and Ekniti Nitithanprapas being floated around. Thai law obliges this selection process to include these candidates 90 days prior to the current term’s expiry. A meeting is expected shortly to hash out the candidate requirements and set the application timeline. Governor Sethaput’s time in office saw clashing views on economic strategies. He faced heat from the government, persistently arguing against interest rate cuts pushed by the Pheu Thai-led administration, which aimed to boost an economy seen as sluggish. Moreover, he publicly criticised the Pheu Thai's "digital wallet" initiative, a potential 450 billion baht cash distribution that hardly seemed digital. Sethaput has advocated for transformative reforms necessary to ensure Thailand's economic competitiveness, simultaneously stressing the independence central banks must maintain from political sets. This stance became more evident after political moves attempted to elevate former Pheu Thai minister, Kittiratt Na-Ranong, to a leading bank role. This political shuffle was halted when a court deemed Mr. Kittiratt ineligible due to recent political ties. The baton now passes on, with the selection of a new governor likely hinting at the direction Thailand's financial stewards might steer. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has launched an urgent sanitation campaign to eliminate flies and prevent disease at the site of the collapsed Office of the Auditor General (OAG) building. Chemical spraying is being carried out in stagnant water areas and garbage pits, amid concerns about diarrhoea outbreaks and the safety of workers on site. Following concerns expressed by Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt about public health risks, officers from the BMA’s Health Department were dispatched to the collapse site to manage sanitation hazards, especially the presence of flies which are known carriers of gastrointestinal diseases. Mr. Krittipat Aramram, a senior public health officer, explained that the heavy rainfall in recent days had created ideal breeding conditions for flies. The insects, which go through four life stages, egg, larva, pupa, and adult, can live for up to 31 days in their mature form. Eggs are often laid in decaying waste or stagnant water, posing a potential health threat to workers and local residents. To combat the problem, BMA staff are spraying chemical agents in areas where flies are likely to breed, such as puddles and waste disposal zones. The approach involves both larvicidal spraying to destroy eggs and the use of bait laced with toxins to kill adult flies. Officials emphasised that all chemical use is carefully managed to avoid exposure near food preparation zones or active work areas. Although no health issues have been reported so far among personnel, BMA officers stressed that preventive action is necessary to ensure continued safety. In addition to insect control, wastewater treatment is also being carried out inside the collapsed building. BMA health teams began operations on 16 April, focusing especially on the flooded basement areas. Hypochlorite disinfectant is being added to contaminated water sources twice a week, every Wednesday and Saturday and this routine will continue until the end of May 2025. Despite weather-related challenges, city officials remain committed to mitigating health risks at the site and ensuring the safety of both staff and the public. -- 2025-04-17
