New Zealander Caught Smuggling Cocaine in Passport at Phuket Airport

A 24-year-old New Zealander has been arrested at Phuket International Airport after attempting to smuggle cocaine into Thailand, concealing the drug inside his passport.

 

Phuket Immigration officials reported that the arrest took place on 8 April at around 15:10  following a joint operation between the Phuket Airport Immigration Investigation Unit and Sakoo Police.

 

 

During a routine check at the international arrivals hall, officers discovered 0.18 grams of cocaine hidden inside a small resealable plastic bag, which had been tucked into the suspect’s passport.

 

The suspect, whose name was not released by authorities, was promptly taken into custody and will be charged accordingly.

I've never seen any "routine check" of an arriving passenger's pockets at any airport in Thailand, ever. Or did he literally hand the passport containing the drugs to the immigration officer? And if this all stemmed from this magical "routine check", how had they organized a "joint operation" to arrest the guy?

You got it. There is a Thai model/actress in jail for over 30 years for a tenth of a gram of coke (or meth). I don't see how that case, or this, are anything more than a set up. I would like to think he is guilty of something else, .... never will know.

Phuket airport is also where they found bullets in the luggage of two departing tourists. That little event cost 6 weeks plus in the pokey and roughly 50K USD  each.  In one of those cases, the perp asked to see the bullet, they never showed it to him. Instead he got the old Sierra Madre routine ... we don't need no stinking bullets.

I'd venture a guess that it somehow accidentally found its way into his PP. Like PP and coke were in the same pocket/bag and it got stuck in PP. He probably thought he lost it but wasn't concerned, as it was a small amount.

I agree he probably had it on his carry on bag with his passport, Wallet and other things and probably did the rest of the bag on the trip and just stuck it in the pocket and it slipped into his passport. I don’t want to think he was that stupid to put in there on purpose, but I guess we’ll never know. Stupid either way and he’ll pay for it.

I guess he just put the coke in his bag and it somehow slipped into the pages of his passport. He might have even forgotten it was there. I mean, it's such a pathetically small amount, it's easy to forget, especially if you're wasted. I bet it was a shock when the officer started thumbing through his passport and it just fell out though, lol.
