A man was seriously injured after being shot while attempting to intervene in an altercation between a woman and her alleged partner during Songkran celebrations in Chiang Rai. The suspect, described as a tomboy-style woman, was subdued by witnesses and later taken into police custody. The incident took place at approximately 20:50 on 13 April in the Ban Mai community of Rim Kok subdistrict, Mueang Chiang Rai district. Police from Chiang Rai City Police Station detained the armed woman for questioning after she allegedly shot 45-year-old Mr. Manat during the water festival celebrations. According to witnesses, Mr. Manat and his friends were enjoying Songkran festivities, drinking and splashing water along the roadside, when they noticed a young woman walking by. Moments later, a car swerved in front of her, and the female suspect exited the vehicle, aggressively pulling and shouting at the woman. A heated argument followed. Mr. Manat and his group approached in an attempt to de-escalate the situation. Initially, the confrontation appeared to subside, with the suspect returning to her vehicle. However, instead of leaving, she retrieved a handgun and returned to the scene. Without warning, the suspect opened fire, hitting Mr. Manat in the hand and abdomen, causing him to collapse. His friends, who were nearby, quickly intervened, disarming the woman and detaining her until police arrived. Emergency services rushed Mr. Manat to hospital for urgent treatment, while the suspect was taken to Chiang Rai Police Station along with the firearm used in the attack. Police have confirmed that a full investigation is underway to determine the motive and exact sequence of events. Charges are expected to be filed against the suspect once the inquiry is complete. -- 2025-04-15 8 1

cmsally Posted yesterday at 02:57 AM Posted yesterday at 02:57 AM One of the first lessons I learned in Thailand; if there is trouble and a person returns to their vehicle (even a motorbike, especially lifting the seat), you make a run for it or get behind something. This might be the time they go and retrieve their gun. 1 1

Beating her girlfriend senseless would have gotten Ms. Tom a slap on the hand. Carrying a weapon without a permit (I'm assuming) and shooting a Thai citizens (or anyone for that matter) is going to get a lengthy prison stay unless she can buy her way out of it.
