Chinese Face Legal Action Over Dangerous Songkran Water Blasts

Police in Bangkok’s Makkasan district have taken legal action against a group of Chinese nationals, who rented several water trucks and used high-pressure hoses to spray other Songkran revellers, posing a serious safety risk.

 

According to a report by Channel 7, the youths, believed to have rented five water trucks, sat atop the vehicles and sprayed powerful jets of water at pedestrians and motorcyclists in the RCA entertainment zone, as well as in the Sukhumvit and Sanam Luang areas.

 

 

The incident quickly went viral on Thai social media, with popular Facebook pages Drama Addict and The Momentum warning of the potential danger. Videos showed distressed passers-by pleading with the youths to stop, only to be ignored, possibly due to language barriers, according to The Momentum.

 

Responding to public concern, Drama Addict later posted an update: “Regarding news that Chinese people rented trucks to spray water in celebration of Songkran, disturbing residents in the Makkasan zone, Makkasan Police Station would like to inform that they have taken action.”

 

Makkasan Police confirmed that legal proceedings are underway.

While revenue from increased numbers of tourists may be beneficial to Thailand there is a distinct lack of regulations that should be introduced that would benefit other businesses & tourists who are not interested in being soaked to the skin for 10 days on the trot. There should be a cutoff point like there was many years ago whereby throwing of water terminated at 18:00hrs providing time for people to enjoy going of a meal & sitting comfortably in an airconditioned environment & further enjoying the day. Business owners must also want this as they do not want water throwing or indeed people sitting soaking wet through on their furniture, coupled with the lack of income due to people not wanting to go out and being soaked preventing them from having a relaxing evening.

2. Ridiculous Chinese "win every encounter" thinking leading to highly unnecessary aggressive behaviour.

3. Huge entitlement in a foreign country. Thailand is not a vassal state of China.

4. Absent police.

5. Action only taken after 'social media outrage'.

6. Did the company renting out the water truck have any questions?

7. I am going to guess you cannot drive a water truck on a car licence.

 

I will say it again (and be flamed for saying it). If you consider avoiding injury a good idea, avoid the water-throwing battlefields. There is considerable danger from a wide variety of potential accidents and negligent behaviour.

Whilst I agree that it is a dumb thing to do, this has been happening for years.

The first (and last) time that I did Songkran in Pattaya one guy was being driven around and spraying everyone whilst sat on top of the truck.

And he was a Brit.

That was back in 2000.

I suppose that what happens in Pattaya is not allowed in 'hallowed' Bangkok.

God I hate Songkran so much. It's a free pass for all the most annoying pricks in society to harass people with no repercussions.  I'd love to see one  of them fall off the truck and crack their skull.

Such as Rule of Engagement: Water splash only on those with water gun; don't shoot the unarmed.

It was recently in the media some of the business owners were campaigning to get a stop on water gun after dusk. Nothing appears to have come of it though.
