I need Bali retiree expats to tell me the difference in living in Bali vs Thailand ( Pattaya & Phuket )

I'm watching YouTube vids on Bali and despite the classic 1980's  Aussie song by Australian group Redgum "I've been to Bali too "

I NEVER have !!!

Is Bali beating Thailand now in Australian retirees ?

I think so

What's the difference in pricing ,visas ..oh please stay on topic

Retirement visa ?

Rents ?

And stop singing ..I've been to Bali too ....I've been to Bali too"

No just all the bogans

Yes I always believed that ,so stayed away

Now we must explain possibly in a "Academic" way what exactly the word "bogan" may mean.

Perhaps it's the equivalent of the "chav" in England terms ?

It's the lower class Aussie...bogan ..tatts singlets etc ....

I certainly do not mix with the peasant Aussie ( bogans)  and fly business class to avoid the bogan elements

But it appears the bogans are in a place called Kuta

Retirees expats appear to live away from that Kuta area

I've been three times, the bogans are centralised in Kuta for surfing and partying. When i travelled around the island i never noticed them again. You'd like Ubud, more chilled vibe, bogan free zone

Who cares who lives where?

You can avoid people you don't like anywhere in the world.

Bali expats are "lower class" than pattaya expats? Really?

And anyway, someone who surfs is low class? Or are you just jealous they still have the energy to surf?

The only way to know how a certain place is, is to go there and spend as much time as you can afford. Taking other's advice isn't a help, as they might have different views on what makes a place good or bad, tastes in food, scenery, nightlife, climate etc. Reviews are helpful if you see the majority saying the same things, but they still aren't you. If 30 people say a restaurant is dirty, with lousy food and service, and 3 say it's fine, you can pretty much be assured it isn't a good place to go, but if the positives far outweigh the negatives, and that place has food you like, it's worth a try. The same with visiting a country, although it's a lot more expensive so you might want to look at what's available that you might like, then look at reviews to see what others have said, then make a decision, taking a chance if it fits you.

Their vocabulary is limited and mainly about surfing

Why are people with tattoos lower class? I don't have any, but my family does, along with many of my friends. I wore singlets when I power lifted, so what's the deal with them? And flying economy makes you a peasant? I thought it was a way to save money you could use for other things. And you keep using the word academic to discuss things that haven't anything to do with academics.

How many surfers have you spoken to? If it's many, I'm wondering why, seeing they only talk about surfing as you say.

Not exactly sure how it works in Thailand.

But back home, maybe 20 years ago you had to hide your tattoos or you might not get hired during a job interview.

So that probably actually prompted more people to get tattoos, as an act of mild rebellion against excessive conformity.

So the conformity itself is the problem, telling people they're bad if they have tattoos.

I went for a massage and asked the masseuse if she had a tattoo, and she went into a long explanation of why not all people with tattoos are bad. And she's right.

We need to stop judging people with tattoos.

It actually looks pretty cool on most people. Although some people overdo it.

I'm the only one in my family without one. Never had a reason. All my children do besides the young one here, but I'm thinking she'll follow suit with her siblings, seeing they all have at least 2. In Thailand, it's always been noted that bar girls get them, and it's a way to judge, but without knowing the background of someone you can't judge them. In the US, anyone can have them in any position.

Away from the heavily populated tourists areas, of Kuta etc..  i found the locals spoke more English than Thailand, and were as friendly, if not, more so

It has become a sort of ritual. And people who have them are kind of part of a tribe.

Probably all bar girls have them, but how many non-bar girls have them in Thailand?

That's what I meant. You see some in Isaan, and can guess they may have been  bar girls, but times change, and more and more here are adopting more western values and ideas, so you never know.

Plus they speak with that annoying vocal-fry, and manage to fit the word 'dude' into every sentence.

I don't attempt to brainwash anyone about anything. Teaching isn't brain washing. I don't look at people as sheep, although many are followers. My duty as a Christian is to spread the word, but not to be pushy.
