Aussie with new Thai passport with zero stamps, never used it before and traveling back to Thailand soon.
Is the procedure?...

Buy a flight ticket using Australian passport name (different to Thai passport name).

Show airline in Sydney the Thai passport as being able to enter Thailand.

Arrive in Phuket, show Thai passport and airline boarding pass. Boarding pass has Australian name so required to show Australian passport.

Reverse for coming back home but is the new digital arrival card necessary to do please?
I suspect not.

Why would you even do this?

Just use one passport.  Pick one.

At times, Thai immigration will ask to see the foreign passport. E.g. when existing Thailand with a Thai passport without a foreign visa. I believe the intent is to verify that the traveler can actually enter the destination country and, in my experience, this has never caused any issues.

You might be confusing immigration officers with airline check in staff as it's the airline's responsibility to make sure passengers are allowed to enter the destination country, nothing to do with immigration officers at the exit point.

If the wife has status in Australia based on her Australian citizenship, which is most likely, exiting Australia with a Thai passport would flag her as being in violation. So it makes sense to get the tix and exit Australia with an Australian passport/name.

If DTAC is not required for Thai citizens, then she doesn't need to do it. She's entering Thailand as a Thai citizen, and her Australian status, citizenship, and name are irrelevant.

Where did the Thai wife come from?   There was no mention in the OP of any Thai Wife.

Or are you just someone who assumes all Western blokes in Thailand are interested in Thai women.

There is also this topic about the passport use by dual nationals:

I had forgotten about using her Aussie passport plus Thai ID to enter. She was born in Thailand and I had actually replied at the end of that thread.

Her name and DOB is different between the Australian passport and Thai ID. I guess this idea is out when reading it's "essential the names are the same" here: https://thaicitizenship.com/thai-citizens-entering-thailand-on-a-foreign-passport/

I guess she'll have to stick to entering on her Thai passport and the original question of her filling out the "digital arrival card" is answered ie: she's not entering as a foreigner so no need to fill it in.

BTW it would have been good if she could enter with the Aussie passport as travel insurance will not allow her two names of her passports on the policy.

It's been my experience that on several occasions, but not always, the Thai immigration officials, when stamping out a Thai passport, asked to see the foreign passport. (I do understand that airline staff may do so as well.)

I would never make such an assumption!

I doubt that Thailand has any rules against it. However, entering with the Aussie passport she would (most likely) be subject to the rules as a foreigner, e.g. visa (on arrival or otherwise), limited length of stay, etc.

The thread below may also be of interest...

My daughter was asked to show her US passport when exiting Thailand on her Thai passport. I suspect the IO was just making sure she would be able to enter at her destination as she had no visas in her Thai passport.

When checking in at the airline counter, my kids always present both passports and the airline staff enter both passports' numbers in their computer.
