Tourist Tries to Escape Wheel Clamp by Changing Tyre

When I was back in the UK a few years ago, a car parked opposite my place had been clamped. I was vaguely familiar with the owner who was a local tradesman and always seemed to be very hard up, his car was an old jalopy. While I was making a cup of tea, I saw him pull up in a mate's van. They got out with their tools and proceeded to dismantle the wheel clamp. When that was done, his mate drove off in the van while he stuck the pieces of the clamp in the back of his car and also drove off. I had to give him points for doing a thorough job, but I do wonder what happened when the cops finally caught up with him, he'd have been facing multiple charges including property theft by then, not just a parking charge.

Standard Fines for Wheel Clamping

For common parking violations in urban areas, the fines typically range as follows:

  • Minimum fine: ฿500 for general parking violations.

  • Wheel-locking in urban areas: Minimum fine of ฿700.

  • Parking in prohibited areas: Fines can be up to ฿1,000, depending on the officer's discretion.

In some cases, individuals have reported paying fines of around ฿400 to have the clamp removed.

Additional Penalties for Tampering

It's crucial not to tamper with or remove a wheel clamp yourself. Doing so can lead to additional charges:

  • Criminal damage: Damaging public property can result in up to 3 years in prison, a fine of up to ฿6,000, or both.

  • Unauthorized removal: Removing a clamp without permission can lead to further legal action.

Looks like they are changing the wheel, not just a tyre.

i bet they were dobbed in by one of the shopkeepers along the road. Thais love to inform on foreigners to the police. But they aren’t racist, they also love informing on fellow Thais

Not all. Plenty of idiots hang out here on the forum 🤪

All the nutheads move to Thailand ?

Frankly speaking, you must be a little bit crazy giving up a potential good life in the west, and gamble on Thailand solely where we are only welcomed as temporary guests with no rights whatsoever.

Surely cheaper to pay the fine than for a new spare wheel, or did they think they were getting a free wheel clamp.🤣🤣

Swap the wheel then get the clamp cut off later.

I'm English. I go to Phuket annually for my holidays. I enjoy them and I don't cause any problems or make trouble. I have been visiting Thailand for 60 years and never had a problem.

I back-packed throughout Asia annually in the '90s, with my then English wife and we caused no problems - all the while visiting Phuket, Kata, for a final beach holiday without any incidents.

I have now lived here in Thailand for the past 20 years. I still go to Phuket - always to Kata Beach area and stay in the same hotel where I and my Thai family stay, year upon year - again without incident.

Thank you for telling me that I am an idiot and for including myself and my family, together with all those other foreigners who visit Phuket and enjoy their holidays without any problems whatsoever. It was very kind, but sneeringly insulting of you to do so.

By the way - before criticising others, check your obvious lack of English grammar rules and crude sentences. How long have you been posting on this forum? Years.

OK, 'idiot'?

Do you think he's a Pakistani or an American or Australian? He's TAS whoever he is..

The Thai Police need to upgrade their Wheel Clamp/Shoe system.

The Czech Rep. and other European Countries us a type that covers all of the Lug-Nuts.

You can't get a wrench on them.

First, where did I post that you and your family are idiots? I posted that all idiots go to Phuket and Pattaya. I did never post that only idiots got to Phuket and Pattaya, did I? So, dear Sir, it´s totally up to you where you wish to include you and your family. Apparently you made your clear choice, but do NOT tell me that I posted that.

You on the other hand, a directly calling me an idiot in your last, so called question, which is totally against the forum rules. Besides that, you also point out my grammar and spelling mistakes, which is also against the forum rules.

I am sorry to say, but if you feel insulted, that can only be out of your own choice, where to include yourself. I never placed you in the group of your choice. Below is what I posted:

If you wish to include yourself and your family in the above group is your choice. I did not post that only idiots go to Phuket and Pattaya. You can chose to include yourself and your family in any other group of people if you wish.

Not too bright.  A 500 or 1,000 THB fee and off you go.  Has happened to a few friends.  Just a trip to the police station.  Better than going to jail.  In my humble opinion.  😇  BTW, I went to the bank one street over a month ago to get my immigration docs and the parking fee was 40 baht, 20 for Thais. 😅  Gladly paid to the local "meter maid".

Does the news always give an accurate description of what a group of people is really like?

Not always, but most of the time they get it right as a whole. Details might vary, but they are not necessary.

I guess your choice is to misunderstand and interpret my post as only idiots go to Phuket and Pattaya. I never posted that. I posted that all (which is overdriven, but most would be right) idiots go there. However, other people also go there.

So anyone who has been to Thailand, but hasn't been to Phuket or Pattaya, cannot be an idiot?
