In a major law enforcement success, the Border Patrol Police Unit 327 thwarted a drug trafficking operation, seizing 100 kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine, commonly known as "ice," hidden in a modified vehicle. This operation was executed based on intelligence suggesting a significant drug movement between Myanmar and Thailand.

On the morning of May 20, Police Major Ananwat Rattanawichai, commander of Unit 327, along with Police Lieutenant Colonel Somchai Soisaeng and Division 32 Commander Police Lieutenant Colonel Parin Worachokkunakorn, coordinated with other officials to arrest two Thai nationals. The suspects, identified as 52-year-old Suphot and 49-year-old Boonpan, were apprehended in connection with the operation.

The operation kicked off after intelligence reports suggested a drug shipment would cross the border from Myanmar. As a result, two patrol teams were strategically positioned at the Mae Sai border checkpoint in the Chiang Rai province, near the Thai-Myanmar Friendship Bridge No. 1.

At approximately 3:15 p.m., a black Chevrolet Trailblazer with Chiang Rai licence plates, matching the description from intelligence sources, was identified as suspect. Units intercepted the vehicle, driven by Suphot, and escorted it to the Mae Sai Border Patrol Police unit for an in-depth search.

Upon inspection, officers uncovered golden and green tea bags cleverly hidden within a secret compartment in the vehicle’s roof. These bags contained approximately 100 packages of crystal methamphetamine, weighing in at an impressive 100 kilogrammes.

Following the vehicle search, the investigation extended to a rented house in Mae Sai district, leading to the detention of Boonpan. Although no extra illegal items were found at this location, authorities suspect both men are deeply involved in the drug operation. Both suspects are currently detained for further interrogation as the investigation widens to dismantle the network involved in the trafficking.

The successful interception underscores the ongoing efforts and collaboration of law enforcement officers to combat drug trafficking at the borders, maintaining vigilance to protect the region from illegal drug trade activities.
